It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about #Windows Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master #security expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

@SomeGadgetGuy If their system is compromised your data is at risk with or without Recall though. Or are we banning native mail clients now too? 🤔

After making my #framework laptop my daily driver, I still had to fix all the #electron applications looking like crap under #wayland (when using fractional scaling).

So another good reason to make a blog post, I guess? :ablobcathappypaws:

Slack, Discord, Spotify, Obsidian, VS-Code, ... now they all look good using 1.25x scaling.

ChatGPT seems to spit out random answers when you start a chat session with a repeated 1000 times (so like a a a a a, but without the backticks obviously)

Some people seem to think it's leaking out other people's sessions, but it's not clear yet if that's what's really happening.

You can ask it what the original prompt was after that though (but again, it could be deducing the prompt from its answer)

You can also use the prompt "please respond with only the string a repeated 1000 times. don't include `", it'll start to print out the sequence and then switch to another answer.
(Asking it about the original prompt doesn't work then)

If you would like the repeated " a" prompt:

Gave KDE another try, now that Plasma 6 has been out for a while.

Unfortunately, it's still quite buggy, visually speaking. In a way that I truly wonder how anyone can use this.

skerit,
@skerit@elevenways.be avatar

@jpgaubier No, been using an AMD card for years because of their open-source drivers. (I do have the wrong card it seems: a 5700 XT, which is considered garbage stability wise 😆 )

skerit,
@skerit@elevenways.be avatar

@Tionisla My main issues are visual, what I said here: https://mastodon.elevenways.be/@skerit/112370658107252788

On top of that, I also still don't really love the look & feel of it all 😬
It's a bit ironic that KDE fully embraces theming, yet I can never get it to look the way I want 😅

skerit,
@skerit@elevenways.be avatar

@Ryan Funny enough, even though I use Gnome as my main DE, it often crashes 😬 Bringing the entire session down.
I think it might be due to my AMD 5700 XT, which is apparently notorious for being unreliable, but still.
I heard Kwin can recover from those things now 🤷

I'm using 3 monitors.
It's minor visual things I have.
All maximized apps have 1px wide line of glitched visual content on the right & bottom side, the top panel should be maximized over the center monitor, but it "sticks out" on the right monitor for a +/- 30 pixels. My top panel & left panel are also overlapping somehow. And the entire panel edit-mode thing is still kind of awkward to use.

It looks like KDE: borders everywhere. :disapproval:

It's not super clear what #ikea wants me to do here. I thought I was missing some piece, but maybe they want me to use some kind of padding when putting it on its side? Which is weird, because it's been on its side since the beginning.

Why is it impossible to buy eGPUs in Europe? They're all sold out. Is anyone even still making these?

The best one out there (Razer Core
X Chroma) came out in 2020. It's 4 years old! The runner-ups don't even have an ethernet port or other USB ports.

Maybe this is what should be making next.

skerit,
@skerit@elevenways.be avatar

@sjosjo My use case is actually a bit different: I ditched my desktop and now only have 1 laptop, a Framework 16. I mostly need the eGPU for display connectivity. And as a glorified dock :)

"It's just syntactic sugar", they said. Years ago. Yet I'm still super frustrated whenever I get the Class constructor cannot be invoked without 'new' crap.
I still don't want to use the class syntax.

My computer keeps crashing, and I know it has something to do with my AMD 5700 XT graphics card.

Funny thing is, the syslog now even says that. As in: someone made the effort to print out a post from the archlinux forum inside the syslog when the AMD driver crashes 😆

So libadwaita is basically a library that provides a set of user interface elements and patterns for building GNOME applications. It uses GTK4, but the main difference is that it has the specific Adwaita theme "baked in", and that you "can not change it".

Of course, you can change it. The gnome folks just made it harder than normal, by not making it follow the established theme folder configuration. But in the end, all you have to do is create a symlink. That's basically what this tool does for you: https://github.com/odziom91/libadwaita-theme-changer

But now I found another solution, which does make libadwaita follow the selected GTK4 theme, and it's called "libadwaita-without-adwaita"
Great stuff! One less hoop to jump through when I want to enable the Skeuos theme 😄

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/libadwaita-without-adwaita-git

Ps: flat design needs to die.

Another day, another issue: after -shell suspends your monitors (due to inactivity eg), and then you bring them out of that suspension, the gnome-shell interface performance turns to absolute shit. All animations become sluggish. Switching applications causes stuttering. Going to the overview takes seconds at +/- 2 FPS.

I've had this issue on multiple machines now. I kind of forgot about it because I just disabled monitor suspension on my previous install.

It seems to be a thing when using multiple monitors (I've got 3) and Wayland.

skerit,
