Would you let these Copilot+ Windows PCs into your business? History tells us that cyber criminals will find a way to breach security and access this Recall data. It has to be decrypted for the user to access it. And we all know that users accounts never get compromised. What could possibly go wrong? 🤦🏻‍♂️

@ianRobinson No, I would not. But they are going to come in, people I work with will use them, and thus we are all compromised. Just like we used to get spam just from being stored in a hacked relative's Outlook email address book. Except now it is all of your communications, data others hold about you. All to train the great AI. Maybe security by obscurity is better here on , just put the email pipe down.

Anyone have an email sig we can at least pre-shame people with?

If I am honest, Roger Corman is one of the most influential filmmakers on my current practice, which has nothing to do with cinema. But I got this idea of high impact, low cost from him! X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes is burned in my retina. I will not pluck it out. RIP, what a run. 1926-2024.

The Golden era of Mini PCs - more powerful and often less $ than a - because we are in the tail end of 's monolithic die. Notice has no super value proposition low end chips to go into a ~$150ish mini! Why? Chiplets and fabrics. Intel missed this boat and when an i9 doesn't come out of the oven right they fuse off features and it becomes an i7, i5, i3, all the way down to the kind of amazing value n100 which you find in $120 PCs. Intel is onto chiplets now, era to end!

People above 60 or with parents above 60, what makes you hopeful and excited about life right now?

What is something that makes you "un-jaded"

Something that helps you suspend the mixed feelings of defeatism, weariness, despair and disappointments and makes you pumped, even if for a temporary period.

What's something that has been a constant source of energy, drive and excitement in your 60+ years of routinized life

stalbaum,
@stalbaum@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology lacking the discipline to be routinized, I guess... I work at a research university and I think we are both very lucky and that all of my colleagues are addicted to the dopamine rush from new ideas and new research initiatives. So we get to pursue new things, invent, and make new programs and initiatives, often. I have seen other happy workplaces where freedom to initiate is built in somehow (Google's famous and now defunct 10% of time for passion projects) but that is sadly rare.

stalbaum,
@stalbaum@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology and I am sorry we are not doing better as societies at unlocking parts of the workday that might allow both more satisfaction and innovation or reflection. We don't take time to learn from the experience of everyone in an organization when 1) we don't care what the experience is and 2) when we don't give everyone some time to be creative. We leave cognitive assets on the table and reduce happiness. What are we thinking?

Why are so many (legal) drugs in short supply? Because a cartel of pharmaceutical middlemen have rigged the market to ensure shortages.

Monopolies/oligopolies are killing people, deliberately, and the law -- including the lawmakers in Congress -- keeps letting them get away with it.

Writing in higher academics means more important than ever. We need careful and ethical thinkers, but they also need to be able to challenge conventions question knowledge. This is why I think that in terms of evaluation we don't need to worry about , s and the like of as much as we need to worry about how we teach. The models for how we might teach implied in this article leave me cold, in part because they are trying to preserve how we already teach.

The recently discovered backdoor into the "xz" tool that's core to much modern computing is terrifying. Even though it was caught before widely deployed, the reality that a patient "bad actor" can insert malicious code into key open-source repositories -- a known possibility -- now becomes a looming reality.

See this report from @dangoodin at @arstechnica for some alarming details: https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/03/backdoor-found-in-widely-used-linux-utility-breaks-encrypted-ssh-connections/

and this thread for grimmer perspective: https://federated.saagarjha.com/objects/1d3f8160-fa82-4834-ab79-319da4bc89f3

WordPress experts, can you tell me what this means (and what I should do about it)?

When testing the REST API, an error was encountered:

REST API Response: (http_request_failed) cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 10001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received

@dangillmor called a web service that did not respond... Just no answer. The service is down or non existent. Problems could range from a server down, software farts in some stack or even a bad url. Curl makes requests and receives files via http, much like you do with a web browser but between two programs.

stalbaum,
@stalbaum@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor I explain it to students like this:

Could contact the server and it responded but could not find what I was looking for:
https://google.com/my_file_my_file_not_there.html

This url points to no server, so 0 response.
