Scotland is treated as a free lucky dip of votes for the English parties. They come north, stick their hands in the bag and see how many votes they can pull out to get their leader into No.10.

It's free because they don't have to do anything for Scotland, except lie and mislead the gullible.
They give nothing back.

@mattwilcox @Hadenuff England, sadly, does not have a progressive party to vote for. Red and Blue Tories with identical policies, irrelevancies like the Lib Dems and Reform, English Greens nowhere near popular enough to form a coalition. Northern Independence Party just starting out.
Scotland at least has Scottish Greens and (to a less-progressive extent) SNP as viable options.
Would love to see a strong, English, independence from Westminster movement.

Every forum we ever contributed to, including the web itself, is being hoovered up as AI training sets. I guess the one bright spot of sharing most of my stuff via my own open web site instead of places like StackOverflow is that there isn’t some big cash payment I’m being cut out of, so I don’t feel doubly used. https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/07/stack_overflow_openai/

Keep an eye out when the SNP leadership contest happens. They'll say things with broad based support like this:

(see the Gender Recognition Reform Act and the Hate Speech Bill that also had support from all parties and majorities everywhere but the Tories)

@aardrian Any problem definition that uses the term "special characters" has failed to understand the problem.

In this particular case, are you really suggesting that Chinese and Japanese speaking users should get no alt text, just because some (western) software skips those characters?

Controversial opinion: we should have some pubs that allow children (and actively welcome them, with playgrounds and kids’ meal deals and stuff) but also some pubs that ban them (because sometimes adults want to drink in child-free environments, and that’s a legitimate desire that is easy to fulfil), and some pubs that are in between. There should be lots of different types of social spaces, so everyone is catered for 👍

@girlonthenet Having kids in licensed premises is totally normal in some countries (France, Greece, Italy - probably many others). And seen as utterly abnormal in others (US, UK).

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔
