What's to say? I'm just an average, middle-aged guy with fond memories of the early internet who is becoming more and more dissatisfied with what the internet is devolving into these days.

I dabble in all sort of things, like Programming, Graphic Design and 3D Graphics, Photography, Generative AI, Vehicle Mechanics and Maintenance, some light Carpentry...the list goes on.

I'm a proud cat dad and #Caturday is one of the best things in my timeline.

tokenwizard,

@coffee2Di4 @ajsadauskas @tombruzzo @Gibsonisafluffybutt I run a SearxNG instance and there are tons out there. It aggregates from other search engines, including google, but strips personal identification data from the queries. You can also control which engines it pulls from.

tokenwizard,

@calhoon2005 Did you try the #*##* menu and verify VoLTE can't be enabled? Is it the international version?

tokenwizard,

@calhoon2005 Seems even the G7 got VoLTE via LineageOS. So maybe that's an option, too?

https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/klrqzh/volte_works_on_moto_g7_plus_after_updating_to/

Of course, there are loads of reasonably priced VoLTE-capable phones put there these days....

Ok,
I don't normally share "dad jokes," but this one got me!

Why does Norway have barcodes on their battleships?

So when they get back to port, they can Scandinavian.

We will be playing Celtic music, traditional and contemporary, in heavy rotation today.

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

@asklemmy

tokenwizard,

@ajsadauskas @asklemmy I think I actually have a few of my 90s-era sites archived. One of them should have an auto play midi for the background music. I'll see if I can dig it up!

tokenwizard,

@ajsadauskas @asklemmy I actually started down this path a little while back and have since gotten sidetracked.

tokenwizard,

@ajsadauskas @asklemmy I was thinking an old forum like Simple Machines or something.

tokenwizard,

@bandwidthcrisis I was trying this with the HTML5 audio tag but not having any luck. It may be client browser specific.

So the 25th republican governor has issued a joint statement in support of Texas today… that’s every republican governor but Vermont and half of the states in this country 👀 additional national guard from other states en route to Eagle Pass as we speak…

tokenwizard,

@alissaazar Wait, what? Are the fucktards planning a second coup attempt?

tokenwizard,

@alissaazar I somehow missed this. Thanks for pointing it out. Also WTF??

tokenwizard,

@alissaazar Sometimes I feel like there is just so much shit going down at any given moment it's almost impossible to keep track of. I'm thankful for people like yourself who are helping spread the word about the important shit!

I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

tokenwizard,

@fitheach Given the hashtag, I assume you are running on the cloud? How is your home internet? Would an SBC be feasible to self-host? Something with 4 cores and ~4GB of RAM could be less than a $75 USD one-time investment and might give you better performance.

Just a thought. Not sure of your circumstances.

tokenwizard,

@fitheach Ah gotcha. I was hosting Nextcloud for a bit. It's a really great product, but ultimately was overkill for my needs. If you do just need Calendar and Contacts, it might be worth checking out Radicale. That's what I use for those two items. Really lightweight and works well to sync my phone(s) using the DAVx app.
