Any recommendation for a VPS hosting where you can install #archlinux?

It's for personal usage so something cheap and light.

I'm looking to move all my personnal web stuff (domain names, dns, server, e-mail) out of Gandi.

Any suggestions for a better replacement in France or Europe ?

(for historical, personnal reasons, I'd like to avoid ovh)

I will probably need a larger VPS for my @cloudron instance shortly. Have been happy with Netcup and have no real plans to move elsewhere. But this is a good time to ask for suggestions.

So, what are you all using?

Now that was fucking easy!
Youtube blocked my VPS IP after downloading 6GB of music,
I just changed public IP address via the Console (website)

now I'm just waiting for all the errors to jump at me.

Right, I’m back to focussing on Domain* now that another round of dev is complete on Kitten** and, two years after I originally asked the question: does anyone know of a comparable service to Hetzner Cloud (API, affordable, very quick server setup, VPS) that supports CoreOS?

I still can’t find any. And my attempts to get Hetzner to support it have failed (mostly due to lack of interest on Fedora’s side) 🤷‍♂️

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

(A few notes:

  • Setting up a server and then installing CoreOS is out of the question. Small Web sites have to be set up in under a minute.

  • Must be affordable. We need to be sustainable while not charging more than €10/mo.)

  • EU-based.

Right now, it seems I’ll have to go with Ubuntu although I really don’t want to as I want the rpm-ostree auto-updates in CoreOS to make the sites zero admin as possible.)

Looks like Vultr has it but it’s too expensive. We’d have to charge at least €25/mo instead of ~€10/mo for a Small Web site with Hetzner to make the same ~€5/mo to try and make Small Technology Foundation sustainable.

And I really want Small Web sites to be affordable so folks can experiment and play with them.

Looks like Hetzner Cloud support was added to coreos/ignition at the end of last year.

Really wondering what needs doing to get CoreOS support into Hetzner at this point and who to talk to to hopefully get this done.

A capable colleague passed on a request from their client. They want to know if the VM disks are encrypted at rest, if the keys are rotated periodically, and if there's a key retention procedure in place. Ironically, the client's VPS runs on Ubuntu 18.04, which has been out of updates for a year, and despite numerous notifications to upgrade, they believe it can wait. 😄

Uploading images is killing my self-hosted instance at the moment. Looks like it's because whenever an image is uploaded, thousands of servers then come to request it. I don't have any edge caching, so that's tons of requests to my origin.

My origin is a server in my office, exposed to the internet via a TCP reverse proxy on a and a connection. And it looks like Tailscale is falling back to .

Think I need to improve some things!

Great post and overall blog 👇

I've been thinking for a long time on setting up a VPS to self host some services but lack of time and energy to do it properly (as this post describes) is blocking me.

Yet, I'm also more inclined to share the load in a coop fashion so I may never do it, or do it just for learning and never go to "production".

CORS以前、Not Foundの問題でしたよ。ネットワークログを見て「リソースないんじゃん!」と驚きました。

以上 の話。

Man, it's crazy how much less I/O is my new Mastodon instance VPS doing than the old one was 😲 I think it was choking in that 2 GB of RAM, with Elastic also eating too much and everything else was swapping… now with 8 GB it has space for everything.

I/O chart from last day - around 9 write ops per second and almost no reads

Hello from an ARM server 😎

I moved the Mastodon instance to Netcup as a test, I'll see how it behaves - if it's slower, I'll move it back, but if it's fast enough then I'll keep it and it will be half the price of the current one (~€6 vs €12) 💶

It might actually be faster - the CPU is slower at single-core, but there are 6 cores, there's way more RAM (8 vs 2) and a faster SSD. It does feel noticeably snappier, I think - I guess it suffocating in that 2 GB with an Elastic service…

@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

So, about the Netcup VPSes… I've been testing them for a couple of days, and here's how it looks: [🧵1/3]

x86 VPS:

  • insanely fast SSD compared to current (2-3 GB/s vs. <100 MB/s)
  • a bit faster at single-core CPU work (compiling etc.)
  • very fast at multi-core (more cores…)
  • insanely fast apt-get installation
  • 2x faster processing of Bluesky firehose events (from disk)

"Root server" is comparable vs. VPS, but has a bit more stable performance (dedicated cores).

mackuba,
@mackuba@martianbase.net avatar

[3/3] I haven't really been expecting this, I planned to just move to Ubuntu 22.04 now on the old VPS and maybe experiment with Netcup later, but given that there's such a massive difference in speed (esp. disk) vs. CoinHost/Solarcom, plus more cores and RAM and way more disk space for less money… I've decided to move at least my Bluesky stuff there ASAP, and maybe everything else a bit later.

Subjective comparison table:

I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

tokenwizard,

@fitheach Given the hashtag, I assume you are running on the cloud? How is your home internet? Would an SBC be feasible to self-host? Something with 4 cores and ~4GB of RAM could be less than a $75 USD one-time investment and might give you better performance.

Just a thought. Not sure of your circumstances.
