🤔 HTML-First? https://html-first.com/

😍 Yes, you have my attention.

🔥 I'm happy to see a catchy name for the thing I have been advocating for aka the Contact Us form written in React debacle.

of all the government sites the I’ve audited in the past half of a year, the sites that have the best frontend (most accessible, most performant) are the ones that were built 20 years ago, but the devs are usually embarrassed that they haven’t kept up with “what’s new” and I always go the extra effort saying “no no no, this is great. you want to look new? over lunch I’ll write 100 lines of CSS to make that happen. but this site is plain old HTML and it is the best.”

“add some headings though.”

Banning protests urging a ceasefire on Armistice Day has strong "You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!" vibes.

The Internet is at a point where I trust the geocities-ass page that looks like a child made it more than any slickly produced modern web experience.

I crave your shitty blogs. Give me your UNDER CONSTRUCTION gifs.

Excellent story on how HBO execs used an army of secret fake accounts on Twitter to harass TV critics who gave poor reviews to their shows

It shows why people shouldn't just write off anonymous comments online as just "trolls" — some of them are coordinated campaigns by extremely powerful people with an axe to grind.

We knew this was what they thought, but it's still a bit of a jolt to see it spelt out so plainly.

If you think a ceasefire is an extremist position, then you might want to check what famously radical organizations like the United Nations, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Doctors Without Borders are saying.

I try to not be too grumpy about new tech or framework decisions (or old tech that's being rebranded as new!) because sometimes IT IS just because I don't have the bandwidth to keep up on everything but I'm just so tired of React. I don't want to use server actions. I don't want to use RSC. I want to do anything else. Please, very few are going to use these well. I don't feel like we advanced at all from the days of spaghetti code that people tried to convince us we were saved from with React.

If I think back to like, 10 years ago, the progression in the world of CSS has DRASTICALLY changed the way I build a UI for a website as a huge net positive good. Less code. Less images. Less clunky weird code. I really do not feel the same way about the advancements in JS UI libraries. I really don't think there has been a net positive good. Drastically different? Yeah, sure. But drastically BETTER? No, I don't think so.

There is no discussion, there is no argument, there is no redemption. Anyone that is not supporting a ceasefire right now is supporting a massacre, history will not judge you kindly

Unclean data in action: oh, you’ve never met a Nushi? Me either. But this database claims it’s the second most common given name in the world — because it’s Chinese for Miss/Madam

It’s understandable if weird artifacts like this slip in at , but #2? When you subtract the number of “Nushis” from China, there’s only a few hundred people named Nushi in the world. This doesn’t pass the most basic data health check imaginable, but they published it, it ranks highly on google, and doubtless it’s getting cited all over the place.

(hat tip to Soron for helping me diagnose the source of the fake name) https://forebears.io/earth/forenames

I find it hard to understand why many of my contacts are migrating to this umpteenth social network in the hands of a billionaire, when we have Mastodon, which is free and independent software, based on open standards managed by the community, that anyone can join without an invitation, and which has proved that it works well.

Why laws of thermodynamics don’t apply to Britain is beyond me.

Another poor piece on heat pumps by the Telegraph.

It’s full of lines from vested interest groups who say heat pumps don’t work in Britain because they want to keep their fossil fuel-based business model alive.
