The fact that 'fifteen-minute cities' is now a dirty word really puts into perspective all the time people spent agonising over whether 'defund the police' and similar slogans were too radical.

It’s hard to believe that people are using ChatGPT for serious work when it produces FUD like this, from when I asked it to design a CMS for Batman.

Society is kinda amazing. You live in a big cluster of other humans, and you can get one of them to do stuff for you that you don’t know how to do (like plumbing), or where a pile of humans is needed (like… a coffee shop). And they build stuff like trains.

Is it only me randomly impressed by the existence of other people this Saturday?

Hmm. Yes. As you were…

NEW: Twitter (X) is still throttling links to competitors' sites. We measured a consistent 2.5 second delay for Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and Substack links, compared to a random control group of domains. That may not seem like a lot but it is 60x longer than other domains. This delay occurs via Twitter's t.co link shortener. AND we built a tool so you can test out other t.co links. Great collab with @dphiffer and Joel Eastwood. 🐢https://themarkup.org/investigations/2023/09/15/twitter-is-still-throttling-competitors-links-check-for-yourself

A screenshot of a chart showing that Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram and Substack links on Twitter all had a 2.5 second delay on average in our tests, compared to a control group that averaged 39 milliseconds

are the worst, most user-hostile security design ever imagined in my lifetime. They're endlessly confusing for people, the sync mechanisms make no goddamn sense and their rollout has been a complete shit-show so far.

Let's start with Chrome and passkeys. I'm on a Mac and I want to use a passkey. doesn't even support passkeys, so I can use or . IF I USE CHROME, the passkey generated is NOT synced OR usable on the iCloud Keychain. It exists only on the Mac Keychain. So if I lose this laptop OR delete my Chrome user, that login is simply gone forever.

Ok so I'll use safari. Whoa there partner, now the passkey isn't usable on Chrome! Now I'm locked to Safari forever. Let's say I'm sick of Apple and decide to go to Android someday? All those logins are gone forever.

Jesus Christ, I'll use Windows. Nope, those passkeys don't sync ever! So if I ever lose that laptop, I'm locked out of all those accounts regardless of how I use passkeys.

None of these risks have been properly communicated to users and none of them are acceptable. I cannot believe that we are suggesting that anyone use these broken things right now. Shameful.

Are there people out there who are looking at AI/LLM-generated content as pollution?

Because that is the analogy that makes the most sense to me. It's creating huge externalities for the profit of a few - proliferating enormous amounts of digital pollution (as well as real-world greenhouse gas pollution).

The more AI/LLM churn out content for the internet, the dirtier the water, so to speak. Or the air. And the less it functions for users.

"It wasn't even me!" She wailed.
    "It was someone like you!"
"But shouldn't you go after the lawmakers?"
"I can't get away with skewering them!"

    More serious:

Just because chatGPT answers questions doesn't mean that it knows anything.

I'm not talking about "it might make a mistake" I'm talking about ... the way it constructs answers isn't based on knowing facts or any logical framework.

The only thing chatGPT cares about is that answers "sound like" they are correct and appropriate in context.

chatGPT is not an oracle, it's not even a search engine, it's not a wikipedia even... it's worse than all these. It's a verbiage engine.
