So, openssh backdoor through a patch applied by some distros to make it work with systemd, which itself is vulnerable because of a compromise of the LZMA / xz code.

Quick test on a 15 machine:

$ xz --version
xz (XZ Utils) 5.2.5
liblzma 5.2.5

$ sudo /usr/bin/ldd /usr/sbin/sshd | grep -ic lzma
0

And of course no systemd to be found.

I am having a bit of fun trying to (ahem) 'improve' the test script posted on some mailing lists, but I think Slackware is not vulnerable.

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

For my no-pets apartment, I think I should get an ant farm. If they were to escape, I could just be like “oh no an ant infestation!” It will definitely be more convincing than when I tried “oh no a cat infestation!” 😞

In the US, there are roughly 40,000 traffic deaths per year, compared with less than 2,678 in Japan last year.

To put that in perspective, the US has about 3 times the population, but 15 times the traffic deaths (so, per capita, the traffic fatality rate is about 5 times higher).

To be clear, this is not “omg everything in Japan is perfect!” Rather, the US is failing to address this high rate of death despite known solutions.
