Can we all just marvel for a second at the fact that NASA has found the error that caused Voyager 1 to send bad data, and is working on a solution?

The probe is 163.163 Astronomical Units from the Sun. That's 24408837426 km, and counting (rather quickly at that).

NASA can work around hardware issues in a 46 year old device in outer space. What does that say about the commercial hardware and software industry?

@tinyrabbit "What does that say about the commercial hardware and software industry?"

That they should be sent to outer space.

@thomasfuchs Yep. The Reagans had an astrologer. It's a miracle we survived the 80s.

    @nadiaalbelushi “algorithmic coffin” is a great phrase and I might steal it to describe things like the Twitter timeline.

    @simon_brooke @angusm @cstross The lets-not-test issue is - predictably - happening with the giant agro-businesses in the US. Pretty sure that farmers in the UK and the EU are testing, at least for the basics.

    Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

    What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

    Personal pick:

    Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

    @RickiTarr @roens It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

    It’s the perfect frantic insane comedy. Since it’s from 1963 some of the jokes are as inappropriate as all hell for modern sensibilities, but it’s still a masterpiece. And I struggle to think of a better showcase of human greed and shortsightedness. 😁

    To celebrate Towel Day, here is a special treat for fans of Douglas Adams.

    Around 1994 I had a chance to see Adams live when he gave a reading in Munich. It was a fun evening with him being in a great mood.

    Now several years ago I found a recording of that evening which was in a sub-folder of a totally different audio book. This recording seems to be completely unknown online with zero search results...

    If I wanted to buy TikTok, how many supreme court justices do you think it would cost me?

    Like if I bought the justices who have been bought from their current owners, could I then trade them for a controlling interest in TikTok?

    Congress would be ok with it, because congress doesn’t care who owns justices.

    tsturm,
    @tsturm@famichiki.jp avatar

    @davidaugust Supreme Court Justices are actually surprisingly affordable, some of them can be had for the price of a large RV and a few flight tickets. They are very collectible though, so current owners might hesitate to sell, no matter what the offer.

    28: How often do you back up your work?

    AHAHAHAHA!!!

    I work on a Mac with three time machine backup drives—two directly connected, one networked—and keep my live work on Dropbox, and manually rsync a snapshot of my live work to a pair of SSDs (alternating, only one plugged in at a time). Also, retired TM drives get mothballed intact.

    Yes, I've lost work from time to time over the past 40 years. How did you guess?

    tsturm,
    @tsturm@famichiki.jp avatar

    @cstross You can guess the age of computer nerds by the paranoid complexity of their backup strategy. 😁

    The desktop wallpapers provided in OSX were too low-energy for me today... and then I realized I can make some in Blender. Not sure why I never thought of this before...

    Got a new Mac and it's quite a difference to the previous machine.

    This Blender scene renders in 246 seconds on a high-spec Intel i7 MacBook from 2020 and the new M3Pro Macbook finishes the exact same file in 36 seconds.

    Almost 7 times faster than a Mac from 4 years ago. 😲

    what's your favorite weird, non-conventional, absurd, sketchy, or otherwise interesting group of folks you ended up involved with, and what makes it your favorite?

    tsturm,
    @tsturm@famichiki.jp avatar

    @djsundog The FidoNet community of the early 1990s. We had a fully community-funded global network over phone lines with world-wide and regional discussion groups. I ended up being one of the moderators of one of these global groups and it was exhilarating to exchange messages with people from around the world within 48-72 hours.

    It was actually a very similar feeling to hanging out on Mastodon, but 35 years ago. 😊
