For the first time, Japan’s Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex partners count as surviving family. It’s ordered Nagoya courts to revise their decision that denied the plaintiff financial benefits given to heterosexual couples after his partner of 20 years was killed in 2014.

So much for LGBTQ support in Japan being a “Western corruption”: according to a new survey, 86.1% of large businesses polled are implementing or weighing programs to counter discrimination & provide benefits to same sex partners. 45.2% says they’re doing so at employee request.

The results show a 15.6 point increase in support for LGBTQ business initiatives compared to the last survey in 2021. The average size of the 36 companies that answered the survey was 2,500 employees.

300 host clubs in Shinjuku say that, as of April 2024, they'll end the urikakekin, or debt system, that's seen some female customers resort to prostitution to pay off their debts. It's an open question whether such reforms will be enough to stave off additional legislation of clubs.
