I am Florian, florian is Dutch and Florian is he/him. I tend to talk about a myriad of different things, including #accessibility, #linguistics, #infoSec, #music, #programming and #gaming. Also #books, loads of books. Twitch streamer, LGBTQIA+-friendly and, oh right, fully #blind, as well. Anything more would be telling.

Maybe this is an unpopular take, but why are people getting so hung up on #chatGPT if it's still getting so many things wrong in an at times hard to verify way?
Maybe my queries have just been too specific but I have never actually seen the thing say something halfway useful yet. It all sounds authoritative enough, but doesn't hold up to the smallest amount of scrutiny. Am I just asking it the wrong things? Does it get better with GPT4? I just don't see it yet. So far, what I see is another Facebook that tricks people into thinking they're smart by parrotting something the internet said without fact-checking, just on demand now rather than on the schedule of others. Is it actually useful to folks yet as a way to learn new facts/information or does it just summarize and generate clickbaity blog posts so far?

Just looking at the new stuff and I'm honestly really liking what I am seeing ... but for one thing. Maybe this can be done, haven't watched the entire video yet, but it looks like after years of people indicating that searching through patterns using the computer keyboard, or entering other parameters using anything but dialing it in would be good and it appears that was not taken into account, leaving us only the favorites function to quickly find presets, and making it annoyingly easy to overshoot the value you want on things like amount of bars and BPM settings. You can even see it happen in the video I am currently looking at where the player tries to dial in 2 bars and initially goes to 8, 4 and 0 before getting to 2. FreakyFwoof@universeodon.com curious about your thoughts on this :) To be clear, not bashing, love that this exists, just curious to what degree this is on their radar

I seem to remember seeing something about a more accessible field recorder the other month, believe it was by Zoom. I might be thinking of the portable microphone they released that also functions as a recorder, but I seem to recall there was another more high-end one that worked using an app or some such. ANyone know what I'm thinking of?

I did warn y'all :) In an hur, Mortal Kombat 1 should unlock for the poor souls who didn't order the superduper premium ultra edition version, and I, a regular schmo with no particular talent for these kinds of , will go ahead and stream my adventures stumbling around in it. appears to have been given some extra thought on this one, as people like @superblindman were consulted during development to get the angle, as well as general accessibility considerations to be taken for this type of game. Let's see how much they were able to do, shall we? I'll see you in an hour over at https://twitch.tv/zersiax

this year, I am participating in the event. I have deided to make videos of me doing the tasks to document the struggles I run into, as well as how I (fail to) get around them, for awareness, education, and basically because I felt like it. The fruits of my labor can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoI1JGnSzOVKWI2fOpymnWcQtgxPLoW4X

Please note that the videos are still processing and therefore may not have subtitles yet. If the autogenerated ones are really bad, which wouldn't surprise me, I have infrastructure in place to do better, just let me know if it's a blocker for you and we'll sort it out. I really hope the community as a whole can learn from this, and that it paves the way forward for better for these kinds of challenges going forward. I'm not asking for too much here, it's about time this industry moves into the 21st century where this is concerned. Let's make it happen! :)

The case for AI in #accessibility is a hotly contested one but I do feel the baby's being tossed out with the bathwater just a tiny bit. Yes, it is bad that AI is being used to phase out hoomans in all sorts of pursuits. And yes, it is also true that at least at the moment, Ai-generated anything is generally lower quality than hooman-generated stuff. And yes, it is also true that we're seeing AI in places we really shouldn't be seeing it (MDN anyone?) and that people, just like always with a new toy, are going absolutely nuts with it and putting it front and center like it's Cthulhu's new miracle to end all toilet paper shortages. But it CAN, at times, actually be an enabler. It CAN, OCCASIONALLY, actually be used for good, and I don't think people who find this out and do this should be villified

random observation but why do so very many voices make absolutely no distinction between a period and an exclamation mark when the screen reader leaves it up to the TTS voice to interpret them? Question marks, no problem. Exclamation marks ...nope. Just like a period. They are different, folks!

I find myself contemplating Dutch pejoratives today. Where the Americans appear to have an unhealthy obsession with one's anuas and everything that happens to it and comes out of it, see also : asshole, shit, assWipe, assHat, etc., the Dutch appear to have split their attention between horrible diseases (typhoid sufferer, cancer thing, get tuberculosis) and genitalia, particularly the non-dangly kind. Our word for fuck as in "aww fuck!" as well as "this fucking thing' is all replaced by essentially the dutch word for pussy, with that same level of formality. One has to wonder how these things happen :) Can we combine them? Can something annoying or unwanted be defined as a typhoid pussy thing? Spoilers, no, not really, but its fun to contemplate. Or should that be cuntemplate in thse? ehh, I am goin

I recorded an English version of my voice back in February or so. I just ran a bunch of nonsense through the multilingual model, and what comes out is essentially a very, very angry person from 't Gooi, the Netherlands. That sounds, kinda sorta like this

Does the concept of a Boot Menu still exist in modern UEFI? Like ...just a list of currently bootable devices, pick one from the list? I don't need boot order priorities, secureBoot etc., just ...hit a key, list of boot devices, pick one, done. DO we still do that on modern mobos?

What is this thing about Windows Terminal and NVDA somehow not working together well? I hear from various people they're having trouble, but it's working fine for me, I'm wondering where the difference is.

To what degree does NVDA actually have support for TUIs? When I look at TUIs (terminal user interfaces) for tools like Joplin, Vim, practically anything that requires using arrow keys/tab within a terminal, it almost always is a horrible experience. Are there things TUI developers can do to better accommodate NVDA? @NVAccess @tspivey
Do terminal-first tools like TDSR in a WSL2 shell improve this at all?

Ugh ...for the love of cthulhu on ice skates in the zoo, I like the quality of Native Instruments sample libraries but the installers and the Native Access platform can at times be pretty ... dire. Oh, an error in the install? No problem, we'll just quietly halt and not tell the user. Why did it error in the first place? Why because there are colons (:) in some of the file names so Windows starts sh*tting bricks. No problem, right? We can just cancel that install and move onto the next one. Except no, no you can't, unless you uninstall Native Access, downgrade it, reboot, and then upgrade it again. What? Who does QA on these products? This isn't even at this point, this feels more like a rush job. Gross.

Had some fun getting a laptop ready to go over the weekend. I have definitely rediscovered that I'll probably never be a hardware guy, but I did manage to get it to work in the end :) Curious to see how long i can make this one last given practically everything's replaceable :)

Damn ... last night I smelled smoke which caused me to do a quick wellfare check on my devices to see if anything was amiss, only to find out there was just a strong, smoky, gunpowdery smell coming in from outside. Now I know why ... an apartment burned to the ground just a few streets over, can't be more than 200 meters. I must've walked by it all the time without even knowing. Now its gone ...and unfortunately so is its inhabitant. Really sobering thought...
