I usually prefer to do my builds with off the shelf parts, like this prop! But sometimes, you gotta get creative to make the whole thing come together!
@melodymayhem yeah, kinda likesome prop malers will do some fancy racks with a shitload of programmable and Dimmable LEDs because real Network Switches and Servers ain't "hacker-y" enough...
@melodymayhem Tho I'm shure most movie productions would likely get a full rack of Dell or HP equipment from switches to Servers if they asked nicely or even some showroom dummy cases and nice Rittal Racks with fine mesh or glass front but that would be actual equipment and even if they did replace every fan with noctuas and yeeted all the noisy parts out that would still mess with set acoustics too much, so paying someone to make a fake rack with some cheap keystone panels, and Cat.5 cabling.
@ClipHead@kkarhan Yep! The balancing act leads to a feedback loop where the need for aesthetics from the art department sets audience expectations, which in turn further veers away from realism. The pursuit of artistic aesthetics fueled by unrealistic audience expectations leads to props like this. What is it supposed to represent? Who knows! (It's still admittedly fun to work on and see it on the big screen)
@kkarhan@ClipHead I mean that'd be cool if it were the case! The prop in question was designed for a lab set–and story-wise, the lab wasn't supposed to be anywhere near a body of water. In this case, it's just the art department having some fun lol.
