Whatever is going on right now in #Russia, I do note this: #Twitter is now useless at tracking this. Junk accounts everywhere, no verified accounts, swarms of sketchy bluechecks.
The ONE thing that place was good at was breaking global news. But not now.
@tchambers It's EXACTLY what many of us said would happen as Musk started talking about freeze peach.
It does NOT matter that there is a functional address on the internet called "twitter dot com".
What made twitter a unique platform has already died.
@tchambers I saw some speculation that this was exactly why the Saudi's put a bunch of money into Elon's takeover. Making Twitter useless for things like this benefits them.
@tchambers while this is true to some degree, I think Twitter was always overrated as a real-time news source. There was (and still is) real information there, but there was always a torrent of rumor, speculation, and misinformation. It only sort of worked if you selected known reputable accounts.
So when birdsite was usable (and, OK, while also having to block sealions and navigate bad-faith arguments) you followed the good accounts and made your own daily newspaper out of the best writers in each, plus professionals, community activists and academics in areas of interest. I do miss that. We don't quite have such breadth assembled here yet, tho it's getting better.
@tchambers That was the whole point of elno muscovy's takeover.
Platform was too powerful, too accurate and fast with political dissidents and investigative journalists all in one place. Despots threw in some money at his direction to take and control the narrative. Cue Erdogan in the last election. They've done a Facebook. But with a billionaire pos(t)er boy.
@tchambers wow, that's insane. I was almost considering making a twitter account for the next few days to stay more updated. I'll stick to this and Telegram
Yes, but the #Fediverse is getting better in that every week. I can only pray that the news about the #ZNPP and sabotage at other #NPPs in the #WarIn Ukraine are wrong:
@tchambers Disagree on this. The Telegraph hosted a Spaces this morning Eastern that was fascinating and I learned more there than here or on any US based News Site
@tchambers Right, Tim? I took a quick look today while viewing a "Russian expert" mirror account here that referred me back to the bird site. And was overwhelmed by the junk I saw back on Twitter. Reconfirmed I'm so glad I'm off.
@tchambers I don't know man. If I look at the trending topics on M and compare them to accounts I've followed on Twitter for a while M looks pretty behind on current events.
