HEY, LEFTIES. LISTEN UP.

Guy I knew had a phrase, "can't stand prosperity." It refers to people who can't take good news, who have to turn it into bad news.

That's a lot of you. STOP IT.

See link. Is this a complete victory? No. Is it a step? Yes.

The response of a lot of lefties is "that's not perfect so it's shit, and you're shit for being happy about it." Not those exact words, but close, and it's exactly the attitude.

If that's not what you mean you react that way, then here's the correct response:

"Fuck yeah! Now let's make them do [the next step]."

Because "that's shit and you're wrong for being happy?" THAT'S NOT ANALYSIS, THAT'S SELF-SABOTAGE AND AIDING THE ENEMY.

STOP.

@moira

A lot of online malign influence campaigns have a "It's too late. Why bother trying?" narrative.

It's intended to encourage resignation, apathy, hopelessness, surrender, and most of all, disengagement & inaction.

It comes in a lot of flavors of perfectionism over progress, "both sides", "everybody does it", "nothing helps"...

Focus on developing a growth mindset to counter these disinformation campaigns.

@damon Definitely.

Particularly the part about how it absolves you of having to do anything that might be effective.

@Red_Shirt_Dude@mastodon.social avatar

@moira Left leaning here. I don't think it's a loss at all:

  1. won Colorado by 13 points so kicking of the ballot really wouldn't have mattered.
  2. will celebrate the fact that hasn't been kicked off of the ballot and miss entirely the major part of the decision. There is now a judge on the record saying that has "engaged in insurrection"
    I could go on and on here (and if anyone asks, I will); suffice it to say, it's a huge win for Democracy.
moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@Red_Shirt_Dude That's not the specific news item I was referring to (I hadn't even seen it yet), but it's also good, so yay?

roque,
@roque@mastodon.social avatar

@moira I still haven’t thought of a better way to put it than this https://mastodon.social/@roque/111270637614636206

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@moira

This is legitimately a huge problem with the political left.

It's a form of purity culture. If a politician, company, law, whatever is not perfectly ideologically pure, then it's completely worthless and not worth supporting at all.

It's like we have all these on the left and literally the only thing they kept when they walked away from the religion they grew up with was the purity culture.

ogbog,
@ogbog@mastodon.social avatar

@1dalm @moira I think of it as black pill progressivism. It even kinda lines up with the black pill edgelord behavior of negging

chiclet,

@1dalm

@moira

Often they don't even acknowledge that something good even occurred.
They are so clouded by their need for a ceasefire in Gaza, they never actually acknowledged humanitarian pauses that are still very much a success and a step in the right direction.

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@chiclet @moira

For me, the most obvious example is leftists distaste for Joe Biden. We have a guy who is easily in the top 5 most progressive US Presidents in history in terms of actually getting stuff passed, but because he has not literally solved every single problem in the world there are lots of leftists on mastodon that proudly declare they aren't voting for him.

Gregnee,

@1dalm @chiclet @moira
I just assume a lot of those “leftists” on social media not voting for Biden are Russian troll farms.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@Gregnee @1dalm @chiclet Oh the troll farms are definitely at work already. Started ramping up a couple of months ago. Not just here, of course, but I've seen it here.

billyjoebowers,
@billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

@moira

We've got to face facts, a not insignificant number of "lefists" don't want to win, don't want change. They love being on the losing side and complaining about it.
Therefore they feel like they have to keep the good news in check.

Crazy Republicans used this for a long time, "If we were in charge and did things our way it would be so much better". But the problem there is when you get that chance you have to come through. It's much easier to just stay the underdog and complain.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@billyjoebowers Another way to put it is being in love with failure.

That's not a healthy relationship but there sure are a bunch of people actually in it.

billyjoebowers,
@billyjoebowers@mastodon.online avatar

@moira

Very true.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@billyjoebowers Hey, succeeding can be elusive. But failure? Failure is always there for you.

(Unless you're an moneyed-class white guy, of course.)

sibylle,
@sibylle@troet.cafe avatar

@moira I was thinking of this, too.

Whilest the the rights are scanding paroles, recruiting, following leaders, building up their shit, people on the left are still reevaluating some basics in attempt of some perfectionism.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@sibylle Not all. Not even half, I don't think. But a sizable - and loud - minority.

daan,
@daan@fosstodon.org avatar

@moira your message rings true, but at the same time by using the term “lefties” - which sounds like a derogatory term - you’re setting people apart as a group and make it easy to attack them 🙂

I’d love to see constructive criticism framed in a friendly and inclusive way. And to be clear, I wholeheartedly agree with your message, just not the tone

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@daan Great! Write some. More than one person can say this important truth. Go to!

ssfckdt,
@ssfckdt@mastodon.cloud avatar

@moira As a leftie, for all I care, fucking anti-consumer robber baron capitalist Apple and anti-trans fascist Musk can have each other and I give a fuck.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ssfckdt Cool! Have fun with that. But I think you left out a "don't."

ssfckdt,
@ssfckdt@mastodon.cloud avatar

@moira srsly though if you think is the epitome of your left and my left must be in different directions

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ssfckdt Did I say any of that? You have very odd interpretations of my words.

Here, I'll make it easier:

The good part is, "Elon Musk's fascist propaganda and disinformation machine that he bought to try to shape the 2024 election discussion as far to the fascist as possible suddenly has a whole lot less income and money to do these things."

That's called a win! Yay!

And the "and" of "yes, and" is now we work to make sure he doesn't get that money back.

floatybirb,
@floatybirb@mastodon.social avatar

@moira I am in favor of improving society somewhat, even if we can't unthing all the badthings at once.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@floatybirb lol but exactly

f800gecko,
@f800gecko@mastodon.online avatar

@moira

This has a manic aspect to it that makes it unpalatable. It’ll resonate with fellow manics, but will it seed any progress toward wherever it is you want to go? Doubt it.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@f800gecko Cool. Write your own version then, because it's important.

@GottaLaff @moira There's a saying I find useful when I encounter that approach: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."

It's reassuring to see other people who prefer to celebrate the victories (even if small or temporary). I think it makes the Fediverse a happier place.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@patrizia Yes, a tried and true phrase, but most people ignore it. @moira

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@GottaLaff I've been hitting on this point for a while. Hopefully through repetition it'll start to sink in. ^_^
