To protest a display at their local public , right-wing activists thought it would be smart to check out all the featured books and threaten to keep them until the library promised to remove them from its collection.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/22/us/pride-books-library-protest.html

It backfired. Citizens gave $15k and the city gave $30k to replace the books and expand the collection.

Nazani,

@petersuber
I hope there is a real library detective out there collecting fines - or adding points to drivers' licenses.

RochelleWinsLife,

@petersuber I would imagine the individuals would also have to pay fines or pay for the book they threatened to return and likely lose library privileges. 🙃 They would then have bought the book!

@petersuber these people trying to ban books don't realize they're the minority in the USA overall. They're going to learn.

@petersuber

"It backfired. Citizens gave $15k and the city gave $30k to replace the books and expand the collection."

So, how did it backfire? The city is out of $30k, and the citizens are out of $15k.

No penalties for the miscreants, who can now do the same with the new books.

frozencat,

@petersuber ok why is that a bad thing can't children learn about that on the internet

@petersuber Yes! Way to go.

@petersuber @marthawells What was even the logic behind that threat? Like, how is "removing the books" any different from the library's POV than "the right-wingers keep the books"? o.O

bike,

@petersuber Thank you for sharing this article. Minor correction, I'm reading this as the city matched the $15k given by citizens with another $15k providing a total of over $30k. It is heartbreaking to read that there are people trying to break libraries and heartwarming to read that people are protecting the libraries.

pcat,

@petersuber Did library cards get revoked that day? Because it feels like those right-wing dipshits should lose their privileges after that stunt.

aearo,

@petersuber

Who knows, maybe a few of them actually read the books and thereby learned something.

Unlikely, but we can always hope.

People who shouldn't have library cards since they don't understand the purpose of PUBLIC libraries.

@petersuber And how much did they collect in fines?

@petersuber

Now they're stealing library books?!

This is what have become. Breaking the law and violating the 1st Amendment to further force their repressive discrimitory religious blind faith agenda on the rest of us. They are literally choosing to be criminals rather than just live and let live.

It's truly pitiful. And why I will always

(I support journalists getting paid, however the New York Times has had a number of controversies in the past, and not everyone has the disposable income to pay for the access)

@petersuber At my work library, if something isn't returned after 3 notices the patron is billed and their account is blocked. If it's similar there, win-win: shiny new copies of those books + fewer bigoted selfish patrons!

Colbet427,

@petersuber is California, I wouldn’t expect anything less. The signaling must go on.

@petersuber Book-banners and book-burners are one of the lowest forms of miscreants. The fact that they can mentally justify banning books to themselves says a lot about what intellectual level they are playing at.

Dickheads will be dickheads; Bigots will bigot.

And calling right-wing activists dickheads and bigots is quite appropriate in my opinion.

Just think...this was just TWO people ...
Their mouths are louder than the people that believe in human rights.
This needs to be reversed....put the racists and homophobes back under the rock Donald Trump lifted to let them out .

EOAK,

@petersuber don’t they get charged late fees?

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@EOAK @petersuber they returned the books 😆

disser,

@RPBook @EOAK @petersuber if you don’t return the books and nobody else has a hold, they get auto-renewed for what seems like months.

cli,

@RPBook @EOAK @petersuber but but but ... they threatened. These people have no moral staying power

RPBook,

@cli @EOAK @petersuber I guess that figures, after all, they have no morals.
