Anti-pasteurization crowd reaffirms love of raw milk despite bird flu outbreak

Raw milk fans called warnings "fear mongering," despite 52% fatality rate in humans.

@arstechnica Aggressively intentional stupidity is on display with these idiots. If only they could be refused medical care outside of google and homeopathy when they inevitably get violently ill. But no, they’ll go to the hospital ER and the rest of us will pay the bill.

Barista Magazine (who are not in the , but really should be - contact them via other socials and suggest it!) continues to get into reviewing consumer coffee gear. The latest is for a hand grinder that wasn't previously on my own radar:

@coffeegeek @coffee That looks very nice, thanks for the link.

I’m going to drop this request here, since it’s as good a place as any. When reviewing travel oriented stuff (hand grinders, brewers) something that always gets left out is not just “pack-ability” but also smell. I love my TimeMore Slim, but for packing the handle has to come off - and my entire suitcase smells of old coffee grounds. I’m using a Ziploc for now…but there must be a better way.

America doesn't need better civics education. It needs there to be actual consequences for doing bad things. Then people can figure it out.

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@gwynnion @lisamelton This is exactly what the GOP keeps yelling at anyone who will listen. Sorry, it’s wrong.

We need civics education and public shunning for stuff that isn’t illegal (and can’t be for whatever reason) but is clearly wrong. There will, of course be legal consequences for some things too and those need to be enforced. The goal is to stop the bad behavior before it happens, not after.

"Musk is the ugly reflection of our collective ineptitude, apathy and stupidity, and as long as he goes unpunished he will continue to pollute our physical and mental environment in ever more grotesque ways."

From an author who has studied Tesla and the EV business deeply -- and who has well-justified contempt for Musk and his acolytes. https://niedermeyer.io/2024/02/02/its-the-impunity-stupid/

@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@dangillmor Great reporting, what a lousy company. I’ve got a Tesla now, and will gladly dump it for a better EV when one comes along. I’ve got my eye on a few.

I’d argue that in today's “next quarter's profits” economy and such lax regulation the company is almost bound to scoff at the laws; I wonder what other auto manufacturers do. Of course, this means we’ll need high, impenetrable guardrails/fines and enough regulators to impose them. At bottom, a political question.

Since I'm thinking about it, let's talk about Ignorance. I have so many mixed thoughts on the subject. So, a little back story on me, for those who haven't already figured this out. My father was a pastor, I was raised extremely Conservative and religious, and while some of it struck me as a bit off, and I was certainly less Conservative than my parents, I was a good little girl and towed the party line. It wasn't until my little brother came out when he was 14, that my wake up call really began. Suddenly, it was personal, I love my little brother, how would he be going to Hell? If you start doubting one thing, then slowly you start doubting everything.

Because of this background, I do have empathy for what I consider true ignorance. For those who did not grow up in this environment, it can be really hard to understand how people can just blindly believe these things. They don't understand the cult like atmosphere that it truly is. All your media is this one thing, all your social circle are people that agree with you, you are quite literally in a bubble of propaganda. For me the combination of being around different kinds of people and factual education gave me the ability to see the truth, and it's something I still work on, with anything you consider fact, you should always leave a window open, there's always more to learn.

Sooo, if you read this far, What has been your experience with ignorance? What is something you've been ignorant about? Is willful ignorance actually a form of ignorance? Do you think there's any true ways to convince people they are missing out on the truth?

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr @lisamelton Somewhere along the way I got drawn into an evangelical church, and wound up quite involved. Leading bible studies, teaching the kids, and the like. I was quite a believer.

And then a bible study member/friend that engineered stuff that flew on the space shuttle insisted that why, yes, the universe is 6,000 years old. That’s what the Bible says. That was the eye-opener for me.

Aggressive, intentional ignorance.

BREAKING: Bank records show that special prosecutor Nathan Wade purchased airline tickets in his and County DA ’ name for trips to San Francisco and Miami

The info was contained in Nathan Wade's credit card statements, which were incl in a filing from his wife on Fri as part of their divorce case.

The filing appears to bolster allegations of a romantic relationship between Nathan Wade and DA Willis

I bake at home, too, and love it. Bread day is always fun and rewarding...and is either tomorrow or Sunday. I’ve inexplicably never taken the time for a real baguette yet. Soon.

And if you’re a butter person for your bread, Trader Joe’s cultured French butter is back. OMG. Almost as good as Paris. Almost.

Do you think there are "normal" people? If so, what constitutes normal? If not, why not?

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr @lisamelton No such thing as “normal.” There’s a sliding scale for every trait, you’re somewhere on that range but different from everyone around you. Accept yourself and others for who they are, not who you want them to be.

*this doesn't mean you have to like everyone, or subject yourself to their presence. And if you don’t like yourself, good news! You’re the only one you can change.

@drahardja @lisamelton I work in a unionized industry and the number of people I work with that tell me the union doesn’t do anything for them is mind-blowing. Amazingly, none of them are willing to send the company a check for the 30% extra pay over what the company offers in negotiations. And sick leave, minimum pay, vacation, health insurance, the list goes on.

I'm curious what happens next re: Beeper Mini. Elizabeth Warren has raised concerns. https://blog.beeper.com/p/beeper-mini-is-back

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@ernie I would imagine that someone will explain to the Senator that there are already multiple options for sending encrypted messages between the two platforms.

Legislation so people can feel better about the color of their text messages would be frivolous at best.

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@ernie But you can’t use just one app on Android, either. (At least for now…maybe) It doesn’t matter what your default app is on Android, you’ll have to use two apps to get allegedly encrypted messages on both platforms.

And I’m still shaky on what happens to those allegedly encrypted messages on the Android device once they’re there. Can other apps scrape/screen read that data without permission?

As an iOS user it’s important to know who/what I’m sending to. Just show me. Say, using color.

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@ernie Oh, yea, I understand that. That’s wonderful, but doesn’t seem relevant to complaints about showing up as green on a different platform.

bubbajet,
@bubbajet@mastodon.world avatar

@ernie So…Apple should foot the bill to run a secure messaging platform for free on devices it doesn’t produce and profit from because it’s not fair?

Or could Apple charge something to provide the service on Android? Oh…I wonder if that’ll be one of Apple’s points. $5/month, and it’s Congress’ fault. Huh. Yep. I can see it ending that way. And it’d be fair. Price TBD, of course.
