    @LeftistLawyer it’s bit like the end of slavery - the debt to paying off the slave owners was only finally settled in about 1980’s

    @LeftistLawyer I was wrong - debt paid off in 2015

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/what-to-know-about-calls-for-reparations-for-britains-legacy-of-slavery-in-the-caribbean

    Is there precedent for reparations?

    As slavery ended in British Empire in the 19th C, parliament approved the payment of 20 million pounds–not to formerly enslaved Africans, but to slave owners as compensation. The UK took out a loan to pay reparations in 1833 and only paid off the debt in 2015.

    bytebro,

    @LeftistLawyer If the rules were properly nailed down, I'd probably vote for that.

    @LeftistLawyer I have another idea: use that money to build as much state-owned renewable energy as needed, and oil companies will mostly disappear on their own. They knew the risks and were involved in flagrant misinformation to avoid them.

    @LeftistLawyer They can bid on contracts.

    donrudo,

    @LeftistLawyer may I contribute with one idea? If “Mass cannot be created or destroyed but only transformed” and Chomsky’s “Create a problem and sell the with the solution“:

    1. Modify trash management processes so Oil companies get back the oil derived, now trash, products.
    2. Make the empty oil deposits work as trash deposits
    3. Then, they could then dump the plastics and oil derivatives into the emptied oil deposits.

    The plastics would fit there and still have free room.

    @LeftistLawyer
    Good idea but doomed to fail.
    The left. "Don't give oil companies a cent"
    The right "don't limit capitalism"
    The Saudis & Russians "Fuck you we don't give a shit what happens, we're good"

    @LeftistLawyer
    It depends on how expendable the people dying are viewed as.
    (Basically how dark they are)
    But solid point. Although after the covid vax resistance because "it didn't work" (95+% reduced death rate at the time) I'm convinced a significant minority will never ever believe stuff.

    That's a real solid point he makes there.
