It is and we will all day celebrate this event.

The gives us two options: deny it or accept the reality. We have chosen the latest.

If anxiety is a thing for you, composting is a simple tool anyone can practice. A worm bin will do that job if you do not have a garden.

If you do not know how to compost there is one thing you can do, go to your local and grab all the books on that you can find.

Please boost this message and help us inspire the and to be the change.

@claralistensprechen3rd @compost Interesting. Thanks to the mounds of pine needles here, our soil is on the acid side. I usually start mine off with a few shovelfuls of worm rich compost dug in. Over the year, I like to shovel a little compost in over the tomatoes and, once a year, the lemons and limes. Mb I should feed them more?

compost,
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat

It really depends on what you are trying to achieve with your soil.

Maybe you want to take a few samples on your property and send them to a lab.

They will tell you what your soil is made of and what it needs.

Then you will be able to think of a strategy on how to create those needs.

You have to think of your soil as a fridge. If the fridge is empty you have an issue, if your fridge is full of the same food that is also not good.

Happy .

Composting is that amazing tool that will allow you to do something about the .

George Washington according to US history was the first one to introduce the practice at his farm and he asked his workers to harvest all the organic matter around and make a pile with it.

Even if you do not have a garden you can still compost indoors year-round with composting worm bins.

If you want to learn composting you can go to your local library or check Youtube which has a lot of videos.

Nature is currently engage in degrowth, busting dams, shuttering entire regions, which remain damaged for decades, drying up transport rivers, heat waves shutting down production.

Climate change is eroding existing productive capacity and it continue to do so with increasing ferocity, both in frequency and intensity. We can scuttle around with out metal and concrete bits, but ecology and green things have the capacity to mitigate both drought and flood. cheap too.

I'm preparing for a lecture tomorrow on climate change and biodiversity. I just learned that the CO2 concentration in Mauna Loa, Hawaii, last month passed the milestone of 100 ppm higher than when I was born.

Mauna Loa is the site of the longest running continuous CO2 measurements.

That's a 31% increase in carbon dioxide in just 52.8 years. It's over a time when we've known full well what the effects will be on the planet's climate.

Sigh.

Had a fabulous #FieldTrip today with Long Now Boston folks. We toured the #DeerIsland wastewater treatment plant. Yes, Long Now Boston is a nerd club.

But it gives me hope: some really smart, thoughtful, and capable people are keeping our infrastructure going and planning for #ClimateChange--no matter what the other noise around is.

Great tour, take one if you get the chance. #BostonMA

The tour starts in this lovely old brick building that retains some of the 1890s pumping machinery around. Now it's set up as a sort of classroom or visitors center. There's an MWRA podium up front and a bunch of state and national flags behind where a speaker would be, but in front of the massive iron pumping equipment. A large American flag hangs down from the high ceiling at the second floor height.
In the visitor center near the pumping equipment, there is a large topological map of Boston. It was reportedly displayed at the World's Fair in 1900. It's about 2 feet off the floor, larger than a typical kid's pool, and the class covered surface holds a real 3 dimensional rendering of Boston and the harbor.
Near the place where they disinfect the water, there's this open gravel covered area. To the right of the disinfection long cement pools there's an odd object that looks like an early space capsule shape, but it's made in cement. It is one of the diffusers that matches the ones sitting 9 miles out in the harbor where the cleaned water comes out from the tunnels. It has a series of small sort of portholes around the cement where the water would come out if it was at the end of a tunnel. This one was defective though, and so it just sits up here for discussion purposes. Off to the background there is some greenery on a nearby hill with a water tank. That water is the stuff that come from the MWRA clean water reservoir system to serve the island.

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

Of course, the highlight of the tour was seeing the actual egg digesters up close. You can't take photos inside, but we were right underneath one of them.

These use bacteria from human waste to chew up stuff that remains in the water at this point. On average, a piece of stuff that comes in spends 20 days in this breaking down.

If you fly into you see this dozen eggs and always wonder what they are about.... Now I know.

Bucket list item ✅

Overview from out the window at the top of one set of digesters looking to another pod of 4 of them. A couple look more like acorns with a different roof structure. To the back you can see a bit of Boston Harbor on a half cloudy day.

mem_somerville,
@mem_somerville@mastodon.social avatar

Also: they BEG everyone to stop using the "flushable" wipes, which are not flushable.

They are like the worst thing ever and damage their equipment more than anything else in the system.

5/snip "The supply system fragility described above obviously affects far more than just food supply. All other critical supplies & materials needed for civilization similarly depend on foreign production, marine shipping, ports, truck drivers, warehouses, etc. Similar to the grocery store experiment, try going to your local hardware / home-improvement store & look at some “Made In _” labels. Just a couple examples: I found plywood made in Brazil & 1x4 lumber from Sweden.

Every aspect of our globalized supply chain is hyperfragile. When shocks eventually exceed the system’s resiliency, for example if a climate-caused creates gaps in those “essential workers” so taken for granted during , citizens of industrialized countries will experience shortages of building materials, gasoline/diesel, car repair parts, etc. Those shortages will create feedbacks affecting other sectors. A hyperfragile system pushed beyond its limit will experience impacts far exceeding the magnitude of the shock."

need ~30 lbs of cobalt, so the US needs millions of tons for the EV boom, which will continue to push 1000s of Black women, men, and children into pits and tunnels.

Of the 255,000 Congolese mining for cobalt, 40,000 are children. They might work for around $2USD/day.

No one knows how many have been killed in the mines.

The Congo has over 90x the amount of cobalt in the U.S., where people are exploited for it.

This thinking matches dynamics in most economic sectors.

For most economic sectors, 80% of a company's yearly profits are generated in a small window of time, often over a week or few weeks. This is true of retail, think Christmas, and of some professional sectors, think trade shows.

The US would have lost the war Milton Friedman had been advising FDR, because he would have asserted or even demanded that wartime factories conform to neoclassical assumptions of marginal cost and productivity.

He would have also demanded that generals never plan for major assaults, based on cost. Nazis would never engage in a massive assault. D-Day would have never happened because it wouldn't work economically.
