13 years ago, a sign was installed at a glacier in , showing changes in the size of the glacier over time. At the end is a photoshopped version, speculating how it will look in 2100.

Want to guess how it looks in 2023 compared to the prediction for 2100?

(see thread for current photo).

Here's how it currently looks.

Pretty much exactly how people in 2010 thought it would look in 2100.

@rimu I think this thread perfectly sums up the problem all along, that the warnings and predictions were always too tame, always too far in the future, always too easy to ignore. Relax, plenty of time to fix it.

Even as I’m typing this, an energy ad just came on TV proudly committing to net zero by 2040. Not stopping now. Not even in five years. Nearly two decades from now. No rush.

@mazzeri @rimu And all along, those too tame predictions have been condemned as doomsaying and fearmongering.

aka_quant_noir,

@mazzeri @rimu We need to be at zero fossil fuel use by 2040. If not sooner. This should be the decade we phase it out if possible. No new infrastructure should be built. No additional investments or mining permits should be allowed.

I'm just going to edit this to add, all fossil fuel credits, tax breaks and other subsidies should be rolled back immediately. Oil and gas is artificially cheap.
