edwiebe,

"The new study estimates that for a 50% chance of limiting warming to 1.5 °C, there are less than 250 Gt of carbon dioxide left in the global carbon budget."

In other words, there's no chance. We still have to eliminate as many emissions as possible. Every reduction helps.

I don't see how anyone thinks that stating, "there's no chance", would help convince people to try to help avoid catastrophe.

Everyone that cares about global warming should try to help in my humble opinion rather than helping the fossil fuel industry to makie their case that we're doomed so just continue with the status quo.

edwiebe,

@GreenFire I'm doing my bit. I cycle everywhere and I've paid to eliminate fossil fuels from home and for solar panels to reduce my energy use. I also teach first year university students about climate change. I know what's what. We aren't going to reduce emissions quickly enough for the 1.5 °C "deadline". It was never going to happen, even when it was agreed as an "aspiration" in COP21. We've barely figured out NDCs and they are probably mostly BS still.

You just don't seem to care is the problem I see so particularly sad to hear that you are sharing your untrue doomism with impressionable university students in particular in this climate scientist's opinion, but we have free speech and all so you're welcome to help out the fossil fuel industry warm our globe if you want to for sure.

Electricity generated from renewables expanded by 510 gigawatts in 2023. Every year, the pace of decarbonization is now increasing.

edwiebe,

@GreenFire

It's not my "untrue doomism".

"As greenhouse gas emissions hit new highs, temperature records tumble and climate impacts intensify, the Emissions Gap Report 2023: Broken Record – Temperatures hit new highs, yet world fails to cut emissions (again) finds that the world is heading for a temperature rise far above the Paris Agreement goals unless countries deliver more than they have promised."

Doomers doom, I reckon.

South Australia had 1% renewable energy on their grid in 2007. Today, they have more than two-thirds renewable energy powering their state and are on track for 100% by 2040.

If you want to spread the lie that humans do not have the agency to stop global warming that is up to you. Expect to be called out for spreading malicious lies that help the fossil fuel industry pollute our planet.

Doom posting is just plain bad for our planet!
