@mitexleo look, this is going to sound harsh, but you asked, so here’s what I think is wrong with this post. It’s not about being open for everyone, it’s about everyone being safe. You’re dangerously close to an “I don’t see color” argument. Perhaps instead of feeling sad, which centers you, you could commit to listening and advocating for Black Mastodon user’s lived experiences (I’m also going to respond to your last post in this thread)
@mitexleo we’re all at a different places in the journey and there’s more out there for everyone to learn, but I’m glad this seemed helpful. Warm wishes
@mitexleo stop asking Black people to do the work for you! In the last 48 hrs without any effort, I’ve seen posts come across my feed advocating for QTs, easier onboarding, less CW policing and the ability to crowdfund without being harassed — just a few of the issues that were they addressed would make Black users safer on here. You don’t need to keep asking Black people to tell you what they need, you just need to, as I said earlier, listen and advocate
@mitexleo Most instances are run by white people who consistently refuse to listen to people of colour about what constitutes racist behaviour. So while they will not tolerate glaringly obvious things they acknowledge are racist, they will rally around and defend anyone who gets pushback for things they don't feel count
@mitexleo I can’t speak for the black community, but I can tell you my experiences here as a Muslim. Most instances don’t really pay much attention their their server rules. It’s a copy and paste thing. Unless it’s transphobic in nature, bullying goes largely unnoticed.
When I reported folks for racism, bigotry, and islamophobia, admins came back and told me that I was the problem.
