I've been a part of many social media efforts. For example, I helped build and grow Hootsuite.

But nothing compares to what's happening with https://calckey.social (and #Calckey) right now.

Right now, the growth is entirely word of mouth.

No advertising, press releases, Silicon Valley-style hype.

But last November, I told @kainoa that this could be a project that changes their life.

I'm honoured to help in whatever way that I can!

@fediversenews

arinbasu,

@atomicpoet @kainoa Thanks @atomicpoet ; we are considering to use calckey for a group of Bengali language instance; I do not know how many signups we may end up with but upwards of 1000; can we use ?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@arinbasu @atomicpoet @fediversenews @kainoa We'd be thrilled if you used Calckey. Keep in mind that we are in active development 🙂

arinbasu,

@atomicpoet @arinbasu @atomicpoet @fediversenews @kainoa
Excellent! The active development is the reason, at least for me, to go #Calckey way. ❤️

    @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews It doesn't say what it does or why anyone would want to use it?

    kimschulz,
    @kimschulz@social.data.coop avatar

    @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews not really except for explaining the branding. What about a feature list?

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @kimschulz @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews There's a feature list at the bottom of that page.

    kimschulz,
    @kimschulz@social.data.coop avatar

    @KelsonV @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews nope. There's a list of components used to build this thing. Nothing about features.

    @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews btw: calckey.social just gives me a blank page here (in chrome/pc)

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    @kimschulz @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews I don't recommend visiting calckey.social right now since it's being overwhelmed by traffic.

    Here's a list of other Calckey servers: https://calckey.org/join/

    @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews One thing I cannot figure out is if I can federate between calckey and mastodon? If, say, I want to use calckey but already have a good network build on mastodon.

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    @kimschulz @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa @fediversenews Yes, Calckey federates with Mastodon, and vice versa.

    arinbasu1,

    not only federated, it’s a cycle or two ahead of the slow moving elephant, plus all the power of misskey flavoured markdown, a mature channel system, an enigmatic groups feature and a lot of others you will probably never use. Port your followers and posts (think the Devs have fixed that issue) and be a happy user of , I’d say. Access the from Calckey on your own terms.

    arinbasu1,

    is the best of them all, with . Fast, very little resource hogger, everything works. If you want smooth traverse and self host, a based server is hands down your best option. If you want to host one for a small organisation, . If you want to torture yourself with the complexity of setup go with but to save you grief, check out everything @darius does. This guy is a genius!

    Bigou,

    @coloco @arinbasu1 @kainoa @atomicpoet @Extra_Special_Carbon @kimschulz @fediversenews I've tried , (only as a user) it's good, but so far I still prefer . But that's only my personal opinion, some peoples will undoubtedly prefer Pleroma, just like there is who prefer . 😉

    arinbasu1,

    Oh absolutely. has a rapid dev cycle, and is incredibly feature rich, designed by and administered by people who know inside out. I was only writing from a personal hosting perspective. is the future. Just wait for a year.

    jupiter_rowland,

    @Extra_Special_Carbon @djohngo Short version: #CalcKey is similar to #Mastodon, somewhat like Mastodon is similar to Twitter, but CalcKey is closer to Mastodon than Mastodon is to Twitter.

    Like Mastodon and Twitter, CalcKey specialises in micro-blogging.

    However, CalcKey has features on top. It doesn't have a 500-character limit; you can write posts with thousands of characters.

    Also, it supports text formatting via Markdown, bold type, italics, underline, code blocks etc.

    And CalcKey supports quotes already now. Mastodon is working on introducing them. Unlike Mastodon, nobody is protesting against quotes on CalcKey.

    Next: Like Mastodon and unlike Twitter, CalcKey is decentralised. This means it isn't one monolithic website like twitter.com, it's many websites, also called instances, running the same project. Basically, all these instances are connected each other and can communicate with each other, much like e-mail providers. Just in case you weren't aware of that yet.

    Okay, now comes the kicker: CalcKey instances are connected to Mastodon instances just the same. You can be on CalcKey and still communicate with people on Mastodon as if you were on Mastodon itself.

    This, by the way, means that #MastodonIsNotTheFediverse. Not all of the Fediverse, at least. There's more in the Fediverse than just Mastodon. And pretty much all of it can communicate with all of it.

    Speaking of which, CalcKey is one of only two Fediverse projects known to me with an interesting feature: It shows you which project a post came from.

    @Ronkjeffries @Extra_Special_Carbon @kainoa calckey.social went from 250 users last week to 1,050 right now.

    100 people joined last night. It is now the largest Calckey server on the Internet.

    The growth has been overwhelming.

    @thrashcardiom @kainoa @fediversenews I'm aware. If you're looking to join , I recommend checking out this list of servers:

    https://calckey.org/join/

    here,

    @atomicpoet @kainoa @fediversenews It's good to see, but I'm wondering if you can explain why typing on seems slower than in . There's just a little bit of latency with each keystroke in my experience. I don't have it anywhere else.

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    I'm not personally experiencing that right now. However, if you're experiencing a bug, I recommend filing it here:

    https://codeberg.org/calckey/calckey/issues

    gdiak,

    @atomicpoet @kainoa @here I think that it has to do with the recent wave... servers maybe overload or may intentionally freeze to control the traffic (that's a guess, in no way I consider myself an expert on this topic)

    atomicpoet,
    @atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

    @gdiak @fediversenews @here There is lots of slowness due to a big wave of registrations and site visits. I know that @kainoa is working hard, but this is a lot of traffic! Would be hard for anyone to keep up.

    here,

    @atomicpoet @gdiak @fediversenews @kainoa I think that's a separate issue for just Calckey Social. I have the same typing latency at Easy Mode and there is no latency with any other operation.

    gdiak,

    @atomicpoet @kainoa @here I understand that! I guess that for them (mods) was a kind of surprise to see that traffic
