Realizing it's been a while since I talked about a thing, and it's just because I'm working on weird problems

Still making fun progress though! Finally figured out how to make a character movement component go FAST. Trying to make dodges feel better n stuff.

Moving a bird around my test environment and the strafing speed is maaaaybe a bit fast

@glassbottommeg looks awesome! Thanks for sharing

Atirut,

@glassbottommeg Maybe you should at some sort of cooldown so it's not abusable

This is like, a LOT harder than you'd think. The CMC in Unreal sorta fights you. You can make the CMC move slow, or average speed, and. Well. That's about it. It doesn't really understand Fast.

The trick for scraping-type fast movement along the ground, it turns out, is to set Flying mode. Not Falling, which self-cancels on ground contact. Flying. Then it leaves you the fuck alone and you can go WHEEEEEE. You need to manually set the mode back of course when you're done with WHEEEE, of course, but whatevs.

@glassbottommeg WHEEEEE

NervousGamedev,

@glassbottommeg the character movement component is one of the few parts of Unreal that I think genuinely needs to be remade from scratch. People kinda get railroaded into using it and then can't escape the problems it causes, especially with performance. It does not scale well if you need a lot of actors to use it, so it's a common source of lag for NPCs. I wish Epic would make a lightweight CMC specifically for using on non-human players at scale.

@NervousGamedev they kiiiind of did. That's what Mass is. Main visible use is the NPCs in City Demo.

NervousGamedev,

@glassbottommeg I'm under the impression that mass is for the extreme case and isn't the most user friendly? There's a lot they could do to simplify and optimize the CMC for the average case.

@NervousGamedev correct and very much yes

I did this same thing with an early grapplehook, set the character movement to flying so I can get to the WHEEEE without other movement settings causing weird issues.

Then I found that it doesn't play well with water volumes or launch character which created a whole new slew of fun problems to solve.

@justdaveisfine oh shit

What happens if you use launch character? Heh

@glassbottommeg

As I recall, it makes a flying character fall until they hit the ground. They are still 'flying' as they are falling though.

@glassbottommeg Is that an assassins creed type game but with birds???

That'd be a billion dollar game!
