I'm planning to self-host a Reddit like instance for myself, but I'm between Lemmy and kbin . Essentially I want to host my own data, and jump into discussions from other communities.

With a limited search results, people praise for , and bash developers about their world and political views, however Lemmy is written with , and Kbin with .

I just want to migrate to what people will be using to.

So, which solution would you prefer?

@arda There is this post, might not be thing you need but https://todon.nl/@mousebot/110564583010475889

@arda Go kbin, it's a combination of all the fediverse pretty much, I'm on it currently viewing mastodon blogs because there's a whole section for them specifically. It's literally just a convenient aggregation of Lemmy, Mastodon, and anything else in between. I think of all the sites popping up people will be using, kbin has a good shot at being the defacto choice just because it handles almost everything

@arda Wait a few days until this pull request is merged, and the kbin setup process should get a lot easier.

@arkcom Just checked and this got merged. Thanks for this. I'll tinker with it today 🙏

@arda Make sure you are working from the develop branch. I don't think it has made it to main yet.

s0x41,

@arda I don't think the programming language matters that much in terms of the wider user expewrience. feels much more like reddit to me imo.

airsay,

@arda note also that has its own baggage. Essentially, it is accused of pilfering code from without attribution. The developer has acknowledged that they used postmill code without attribution and has promised to fix this. I particularly like kbin and postmill and have been able to install postmill locally. Postmill isn’t part of the although kbin is.

@airsay @arda Baggage? Really?

Baggage?

A solo developer, piecing together a hobby project, suddenly finds their project exploding in popularity.

Someone notices this developer used OSS code in their project and failed to properly attribute.

Our developer is informed, publicly apologizes for the oversight, acknowledges it was Not Cool (even under the extraordinary circumstances in this case), and promises to do better.

I see no baggage here.

airsay,

@cmdrmoto @arda so don’t get me wrong. I’m all in for Ernest and what he has done with . Love that he has it federated. And totally love his owning up when Emma made it an issue. I only mentioned it so that @arda doesn’t get “blindsided” if at some point that gets called out. I love both projects and and want to see both flourish

@arda i advise against lemmy. the devs are not people i would ever want to associate with, due to their politics, but even then: lemmy cannot be hosted in any GDPR respecting country. it breaks GDPR. that's a no go no matter whether you think the political stance matters.

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@arda Why is the language a factor? Will you be contributing to one or the other?

arda,
@arda@micro.arda.pw avatar

@Crell One of the reasons, yup. Also, as a former PHP developer, I believe I could tinker with qbin more comfortably if I wanted to.

Crell,
@Crell@phpc.social avatar

@arda If you are concerned about Lemmy's politics and would have an easier time contributing to kbin, that sounds like you should just go with kbin.

animemedad,

@arda I also wish I could save posts for later. I'm going to watch this.

tchambers,

@arda Kbin, less non tech baggage and strong developer mojo.

AllergicToGrass,

@arda The devs of Lemmy seem pretty far left and they show antipathy towards the US but neither of those things are inherently bad. I haven’t come across any negative interactions that the devs have had with the community. For now, I’m sticking with Lemmy.

This is what I've read about Lemmy @feditips that made me concerned.

https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379

My requirement is just to host an instance for an account, but maybe this very account will do just fine, since these are federated and that's the beauty of after all, eh?

ShingoMouse,
@ShingoMouse@mastodon.social avatar

@arda At the moment, I'm not sure as I'm feeling very torn and upset over what has happened with and the recent . I still have a somewhat active account on there myself, mostly due to certain I follow of topics which interest me.

During Halloween a couple years back, I decided to dress my Reddit Avatar in a koala costume since I love koalas and was thinking about involving myself with some pro-koala activism groups due to their endangerment in Australia.

ShingoMouse,
@ShingoMouse@mastodon.social avatar

@arda Oh, and BTW, this is what my Reddit Avatar looks like and I will probably be missing it a lot if something bad happened where I'm forced to make there decision to leave for whatever reason.

arda,
@arda@micro.arda.pw avatar

@ShingoMouse What reddit made Reddit is the community. We'll hopefully settle on where the communities decide to migrate to.

By the way, there's this URL for communities that map where they migrated to:

ShingoMouse,
@ShingoMouse@mastodon.social avatar

@arda Yeah, and wherever the communities decide to migrate to and we hopefully settle on, we may have to see whether its possibly my koala suited avatar from could be migrated there or not.

zaherg,

@arda host your own vbulletin instance :D

arda,
@arda@micro.arda.pw avatar

@zaherg Nope. Been there, done that 😆

zaherg,

@arda good old days :D

Scarecrow59,

@arda I like lemmy, and I'm not a communist. I believe the extreme instances are defedered by most instances.

Haven't tried Kbin
