As an interesting aside, due to the #Lionesses going through to the semi finals, #LaurenJames is now almost assured a chance at redeeming herself in this tournament.
Her ban was extended to 2 games by FIFA after her #RedCard against #Nigeria. She'll be eligible to play either in the final if they get there and, if not, the playoff for the third place spot.
A little surprised it wasn't a 3 game ban, but open for the redemption arc!
I knew that Chloe Kelly's penalty to put England through against #Nigeria was an absolute rocket, but it turns out that it was in fact the fastest ever recorded at the Women's World Cup, clocking in at 111kph. This was even faster than any goal recorded in last season's #EPL! 😮
I STILL dont get the comments from main media dn social media that #Nigeria "Dominated" or "Was a better team"... What are you talking ABOUT? domination is winning. Dominating is like France scoring 4 against another hyped team (Morocco). Not scoring and going to penalties IS NOT dominating or being the best on the pitch. Neither of them Dominated anything. and it was decide who was best at penalties. And English women were THE BEST
@Twitter_expat Dominated, no. But England were on the back foot for most of the game even with 11 on the field and #Nigeria looked more likely to score, but didn't. It's right to give credit to a Nigerian team who dealt with #England's main threats, like Lauren James, really well in how they lined up and their tactics, especially considering the disparity in team world ranking.
England deserve credit for their resilience to win the game too, though.
I belive the #lionesses are going to set for a third place in this World Cup if miracles dont happen. Is that good enough for the European Champion? I say yes beacuse this is a World Cup so it makes sense. Now moving the top power position between #Australia or #Sweden (maybe #Netherlands) would be wild. Saying goodbye to USA domination is the end of an era. I honestly dont belive #Japan or #Colombia will get that top position.
I got 9 hours of sleep last night and it felt incredible.
Now it's time to watch #ENGvNGA on replay - rooting for #Nigeria and Iffy Onumonu but expecting #England to take it.
Looking at the rosters Nigeria has three NWSL stars (Iffy, Alozie, and Kanu) while England has no active NWSL players on their roster (tho they do have NWSL alum and drama magnet Daly).
I've come full circle: I got into NWSL by looking for WWC stars, now I root for WWC teams based on what NWSL players they have.
Massive kudos to #Nigeria in the #WWC.
Judged on this performance, Nigeria thoroughly deaerved to advance. Football is a tough game. Nigeria will be back!
No idea how #england are still in this game. #Nigeria have been tremendous. England women will know they have been in a game tonight, out-muscled and run ragged. #WC23#WorldCup2023
#Nigeria has unilaterally terminated the treaty between #Niger signed in the 60s for Nigeria to provide electricity to Niger in exchange that it will not obstruct the flow of water to the country’s hydroelectric Dams in Jebba, Kainji. This treaty has ensured that Nigeria supplied 70% Niger’s electricity. Today, Niamey, the capital city is in darkness." Prof. Usman Yusuf
If the #Niger junta continue ruling the country, they will have to cut the river Niger which flows downward to #Nigeria the major reason why Niger import 80% of electricity from Nigeria not to obstruct the river.
Niamey is in total darkness.
🔴 President Bola #Tinubu, who is at the helm of regional superpower #Nigeria, regards the coup across the border in #Niger as a litmus test for democracy in West #Africa
Having assumed the chairmanship of regional bloc #Ecowas a mere three weeks ago, he was confronted with a major foreign policy challenge when the military seized power in Niger - a strategic ally in the fight against militant Islamists wreaking havoc across much of West Africa and now open to Wagner-ϟϟ
Geographic definitions of the #Sahel region vary. Commonly, it stretches from #Senegal on the Atlantic coast, through parts of #Mauritania, #Mali, #BurkinaFaso, #Niger, #Nigeria, #Chad and #Sudan to #Eritrea on the Red Sea coast.
Now add to this map, the latest military coups (incl. Wagner/Russia or not):
What do you understand from the map on the previous post?
That there's this big line of (mostly Russia-supported) military regimes separating the continent...
(And don't forget Wagner in CAR too, Russian military in many other countries, more military regimes or instability in other places).
