Those of you who weren't around or aware in the 80's need to understand...
Ronald Reagan had increasingly debilitating Alzheimer's for his entire second term. The people around him were able to manipulate him. He was a puppet.
As far as the GOP Is concerned, Trump's brain being mush is an asset, not a liability.
If he wins, they'll manipulate him into appointing evil people, and then those people will manipulate him to achieve their evil goals.

@jik
Too damn true — the thought of Stephen Miller being anywhere near to policy gives me nightmares.

I honestly think that a similar situation happened with George W .Bush, who only thought he was in charge, but was really being used to settle old scores at the persuasive behest of his father's advisors.

Only in that case Bush's disability was that he was a dumbass

@DavidMHarlan Yes, I agree, W. wasn't mentally incompetent, he was just dumb, and he was absolutely manipulated by the people around him.

One of those guys you butter him up right, and you can absolutely convince him that what you want is totally his idea

There's also a sadness that I see in the guy now, that makes me think that he figured that out.

@DavidMHarlan Maybe, but awareness of one's mental acuity is often the first thing compromised by dementia, so it's hard to say.
I have a feeling he's getting a lot of very bad news nowadays about his legal and corresponding financial woes, so that could also explain the sadness.
Honestly, he never wanted to be president, he just wanted to run for president, so I suspect he's been miserable since 2017.
Oh, and Melania probably doesn't let him touch her, and he's now too feeble to cheat on her.

@jik

As far as Trump goes he looks absolutely miserable and I'm so here for it

@jik I was referring to Bush II (post-presidential depression).

Of course, "if he wins" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. The big difference between Reagan and Trump is that Reagan was still able to campaign coherently in 1984, and he was the incumbent.
By the general election Trump will likely be too addle-brained to speak in public. And he's running against an incumbent in a good economy.
