How close might a general election be?

Rishi Sunak has suggested the prospect of a hung Parliament, while others are talking up a Labour landslide.

Paul Whitely (U Essex) suggests Labour might win but with quite a small majority (in his analysis, 10 seats).

For many who have expressed opinions in discussion in my timeline this would seem to be a good result; a majority to get tings done, but small enough to be a brake on (more) dilution of left policy?

@ChrisMayLA6 Even everyone's favourite psephologist, Sir John Curtice, was calling it for "no overall majority" when the results of the locals were extrapolated to predict the general. Sunak's probably trying to make himself feel better about destroying the Cons, but just because there's a hung Parliament doesn't mean the Tories will be the second largest! In fact, they were in 4th place in one of the analyses I saw.

@fkamiah17

My guess is FPTP will work against a different second party, although I suppose the LibDems have a shot.... it may be quite an interesting election

@ChrisMayLA6 IIRC the percentages were very close but LD and Green were ahead of the Tories.

Yup, but the low-turnout & different media landscape(s) in general elections have in the past made building on such results difficult for small(er) parties - that's not saying it won't happen, just that in the past its been hard to jump into second place via national FPTP... but we have less than a year to wait to find out

@ChrisMayLA6 Just repeating Curtice's figures, nothing more.

@ChrisMayLA6 I imagine a small majority could make Labour very timid indeed.

@timrichards @ChrisMayLA6 Maybe not if they go into coalition with either the SNP or Lib Dems. I don't know much about the SNP nowadays but the Lib Dems are to the left of Labour on almost every issue, so could be putting pressure on them to not be timid!

@huxley @timrichards

That would seem to be a common hope across my timeline

@ChrisMayLA6 @huxley Same kind of hopes here - we were disappointed when the Australian Labor Party scraped in with a small majority, rather than having to join up with the Greens. I suspect it'll happen next time round. Labor by itself has been quite timid.
