So... in the US we now have an "anti-library" party. It's remarkable how many ways republicans keep coming for libraries and librarians. From the stuff in Houston where they are turning libraries into "discipline centers" and firing librarians. To the books bans and empty shelves in Florida.

Libraries are powerful and important, and if this doesn't make that clear? I don't know what will.

@futurebird Texas and Florida serve as a constant reminder of how things will look in America if this batch of nazis take over.

@futurebird Thinking bad! Must produce brainless serfs to maintain endless churn! Reproduce! Consume! Obey!

It's simple: they want more voters, so they can win elections at the highest levels. Their BIG idea is to stop people who visit libraries from reading the daily papers, magazines, and books of every sort, as well as using the free library computers.

I think communities need to demonstrate their dislike for this new really bad idea forced on them. They need to get on school boards and stop this crap! carry on

Whoever has the sovereignty of interpretation over education determines the direction of politics and society. The clergy knew this very well in past eras.

@futurebird George Will's column today in the WaPo:

"Unleash a library police force, and you will soon have a shortage of librarians."

As if that wasn't the goal.

Christofascist Nationalist Movement KKKrowd agenda = keep the masses uneducated and unquestioning of authority. 🤬

dan613,

@futurebird Libraries are a threat to evangelicalism. Republicans could never win seats without the support of evangelical ministers telling their groups who to vote for (against taxation rules, I believe). But their current efforts seem like acts of desperation. Ones that I hope will backfire.

Fragglemuppet,

@futurebird It's scary and upsetting, to be sure.
