So... in the US we now have an "anti-library" party. It's remarkable how many ways republicans keep coming for libraries and librarians. From the stuff in Houston where they are turning libraries into "discipline centers" and firing librarians. To the books bans and empty shelves in Florida.

Libraries are powerful and important, and if this doesn't make that clear? I don't know what will.

A more subtle policy they've had for years, at least here in Florida is they throw throw out / sell books that dont get checked out frequently, and then stock the shelves with best sellers -- primarily self help and other garbage.

So the empty shelves in Florida are less a result of book banning ( that is a thing ) but because they treat libraries like book stores rather than repositories on knowledge.

Naturally books of advanced or practical nature like electrical engineering or any other science or trade get the axe.

This isn't a new thing either, first became aware of it over 10 years ago. NeoLiberalism smdh

@futurebird it's like I told my mom I was hungry so using republican logic she threw out all the food.

@futurebird I don't even want to think about what a "discipline centre" is. 🇦🇺🦘

1900490Freak,

@futurebird its sad cause it's gonna heavily affect the current kids. A large majority of parents are getting lazier so with schools removing important education, they won't regain it at home.

The country is trying to make uneducated children who won't and can't question them.

@futurebird Parents have a right to decide how to teach their children. Not letting teachers read sexually explicit content in front of little children is far from 1984

They are getting rid of the libraries altogether. Every single book. The whole thing.

@futurebird Thanks for pointing at this! While some of this can be attributed to feckless and wayward halfwits, I think there is too much blatantly fascist tooling in all these attempts to undermine the freedoms in our society, for it not to be largely work proceeding under a deliberate agenda, or several. The playbooks are out there and people are using them I think.

@futurebird telling teens and young adults they can't do something, read something or hang out with somebody, assures they will. I did; I turned out fine.
Well, I might be exaggerating the last part.

@futurebird It just shows how STUPID ReTrumplicans ARE !! Sure, let’s get rid of ALL the books so everyone else can be as stupid as trumpys !! This movement to ban books in America is just STUPID and should be stopped by these FAUX Christian MORONS !!

Rand,

@futurebird It seems clear the goal is Idiocracy. Looking back on the political history of the United States, it has always been. We reach great heights, then within that generation we're going to be struggling for the right to READ.

@futurebird there was a time when the richest folks in the world gave their fortunes to building libraries and funding research…almost as if they knew the value of education and knowledge was incomparable to any physical object you could buy. A knowledgable society is a healthy, robust and generally fair society. Its one that is harder to exploit…and therein lies the problem for unscrupulous politicians with libraries.

@futurebird Closing libraries is equivalent to burning books and with that knowledge. The GOP are steps away from fascism.

@futurebird When they ban the ability to read

(But only for the underserving... they can read, they love reading!)

housepanther,

@futurebird Republicans live in mortal fear of an educated proletariat. They want the working class and poor just educated enough to be able to serve them. Anything beyond the minimum they perceive as a threat to the status quo.
