Congratulations, Republicans! Idaho's Teacher of the Year hounded out of the state by twisted, hollowed-out #GOP bigots. https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2023/08/idahos-teacher-of-the-year-flees-state-after-being-attacked-for-lgbtq-allyship/

Fascists target education b/c:

  1. The uneducated are easier to control.
  2. "Get'em while they're young" indoctrination is their bulwark that helps ensure continued power.

The best thing you can teach your children is disrespect for authority.

The job of every parent is the development of a functional adult, capable of dealing with an uncertain future.

It means teaching children to be critical thinkers; able to look at issues from multiple perspectives.

Skills like healthy sceptism, rejection of received "wisdom" & learning the lessons of history & science.

Republican billionaire donors court those unwilling or incapable of mastering these skills of the future.

@stevesilberman Well, this isn't Orwellian at all:

"In Arkansas, for example, the questions on the contest form were recently updated to require praise for a new education law signed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The form reportedly asked teachers how Sanders’s anti-critical race theory and anti-LGBTQ+ laws had positively impacted students."

CBells,

@stevesilberman the dumber the masses are, the easier it is to control them.

@stevesilberman Republicans argue that 'social and emotional learning' — a style of instruction that encourages healthy self-awareness, decision-making, and interpersonal skills' ... is “a left-wing ideology.” How curious.

@stevesilberman Hate is Idaho's State Flower.

Incognitim,

@stevesilberman
The conservative Idaho Tribune called Lauritzen a “left-wing activist” who “follows drag queens on social media, promotes LGBT events, promotes transgenderism, Black Lives Matter, & is active in local politics, promoting liberal ideology.” It also blasted her for liking posts on social & emotional learning- an instruction style that encourages healthy self-awareness, decision-making, & interpersonal skills- which the article described as “a left-wing ideology.”
She sounds great!💚

As I said elsewhere, the modern GOP is a fascist party. If you vote for them, you're a fascist.

HighnoonOne,

@stevesilberman healthy self awareness = left wing ideology. Wild and telling.

Yeah I’m sure I’m not the first to say driving a good teacher out is a win for them. They actively want to destroy public education.

They're probably excited by the prospect of replacing her with someone who will openly teach the Bible.

As with abortion & trans doctors, the rest of the states can only absorb very few skilled and knowledgeable workers. Over the next few years, our nation's overall level of expertise will drop.

@stevesilberman This story is horrifying. The parents who are threatening and pushing out this teacher have no clue how fascist they have become.

@stevesilberman First, as a recovering Idahoan, I'm not surprised yet still saddened. My mother, a proud 1952 graduate of the Post Falls school system, would be livid.

Second, I'm laughing that there are apparently Idaho conservatives that think the U of I is teaching "all the latest trends in queer theory and social and emotional learning.” Sure, Moscow is pretty left for north Idaho, but so is Spokane, ffs. I imagine someone saw a kid with facial piercings when shopping at TriState ("Idaho's Most Interesting Store").

(I'm not digging on Moscow - I got a much better education than I deserved there. And like 2/3 of all graduates, I left the state for better jobs right after. Go Vandals!)

Third, let's all raise a toast to President Eisenhower, who founded both the teacher of the year program, and the interstate highway program. I never thought one had anything to do with the other, but Idaho GOP has taught me that first you win one, then you escape with the other.

@stevesilberman Looking over from Germany there are two thoughts that cross my mind:

  1. It is really unbelievable stupid, what kind of "accusations" are promoted in seemingly trustworthy media, America is drifting into utter Idiocracy. One has to be completely disturbed to believe such bullshit like framing being a decent human being as "liberal Ideology".

  2. I fear, in Germany we are only some years behind, as always with everything.
