@faab64 @palestine How sad for the IDF - they'll have to switch to bayonets if the US bombs can't get there.

That's going to be a lot more work for the IDF public affairs team to spout platitudes about accidentally bayonetted children.

@qkslvrwolf It would be nice to cut down on the illegal transfer of gold bars to politicians, too. So far, that's mostly Democrats.

Fascists are pretty fucking bad. Corruption is bad, too - it's what got the fascists a toe-hold.

grumble209,

@qkslvrwolf Weird that the Dem party never bankrolls challengers to corrupt Dem incumbents (Cuellar, Menendez) or their designated scapegoats (Manchin, Sinema). One could infer, rightfully, the Democratic Party wants power more than, well, democracy.

Political parties aren't mentioned in the Constitution. They are a cancer, selling policy to their donors and delivering tribalism to their voters.

Corruption is corruption, whether it's for fascists and religious zealots, or for "normal", mainstream billionaires. America deserves better. We can have better, if only we put aside partisan bullshit.

The stench of hypocrisy surrounding the Eurovision this year was just astounding.

While Israel was performing at #Eurovision, their troops were murdering displaced Palestinians in Rafah, bombing UNDP building and invading parts of Gaza they had declared "safe" for refugees.

“If the workers of the world want to win, all they have to do is recognize their own solidarity. They have nothing to do but fold their arms and the world will stop. The workers are more powerful with their hands in their pockets than all the property of the capitalists.”

In 2006, …Donald #Trump met the adult-film star #StormyDaniels. According to Daniels, things got intimate. (“The sex was nothing crazy,” she would go on to say.) A decade later, Trump was running for President, as a kind of #Republican uber-family man, drawing crucial support from #conservative, #evangelical voters. Daniels decided to go public: her encounter w/ Trump had taken place while he was already married to his third wife, Melania.

grumble209,
@grumble209@techhub.social avatar

@Nonilex Frame the case as "election interference" if you like, but that relies on the assumption that the electorate cares about the truth. Seems obvious that the population (as a whole) couldn't care less about the truth. Certainly they don't care enough to let the truth influence how they vote.

Trump is a silly asshole, and if justice is ever served, he's going to suffer mightily. But the bigger problem is that 1/3 of the country identifies with him.

grumble209,

@moira @billyjoebowers I like your analysis. My only quibble is that I don't think that fighting the fascists outside of the voting booth will be easier.

If the Zoomers and Millennials actually wield electoral power, I look forward to seeing them unfuck things that are way overdue: expanding SCOTUS (how about 17?), expanding the House (how about 2500?), codifying abortion access (where's the draft legislation?), campaign finance reform, etc.

My God, the Democrats might support actual democratic reforms for a change. That would be a sight to behold.

TonyStark, to random

Trump and Republicans get the blame for this. This ruling would have been unconstitutional under Roe, but Trump is proud that he stacked SCOTUS with anti-abortion justices who overturned it. There are many effects of losing those protections, and this is one of them.

As always, don’t listen to what they say, watch what they do.

@TonyStark Congrats, Arizona! If Idaho's experience is any indication, you've just fucked over women by encouraging your local ObGyns to leave the state.

Your rural hospitals will be hit the hardest, and many will stop offering delivery services. But even in metro areas any ObGyns not close to retirement will relocate to California or New Mexico. Your middle-of-the-road infant mortality stats will likely get worse.

Will there be fewer abortions? Who knows! We'll have to wait and see the stats from neighboring states. In a state directly involved in cross-border human smuggling operations, I kind of doubt running abortion travel services would be too hard to develop.

@DrALJONES LARRY HEBERT: ... they all told me that joining the Air Force would set me up for life, through education, through housing, through, you know, just the basic pay. And while that was true, there is an element that I realize that I didn’t understand the entirety of, you know, our foreign policy. So, that was my reason for joining. And I don’t entirely regret my time in the military, but now that I’m more aware of our foreign policy and what’s going on, I definitely — I can’t see myself continuing service.

    My comment:
It most definitely sucks when you take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution but end up being a henchman for politicians and their foreign political friends. Even worse realizing the thin veneer of democracy allowed to US citizens this century doesn't include any meaningful input on America's foreign policy.

It costs ~$70 to produce a year’s supply of insulin. Yet, the average annual cost of insulin went from $2,864 in 2012 to $5,705 in 2016 to $18,000 in 2024. That’s a 25,714% markup.😳

@jackofalltrades @pvonhellermannn Look at capitalism from the perspective of the mid-18th century: it's a fantastic way to take the little surplus in society and create a larger surplus. The fact that the surplus is not shared equitably is less important than the idea of making more surplus, because almost everyone is one bad harvest or one new virus away from an early death.

Now it's 300 years later. The planet mostly creates enough calories for our massive population to live without the constant threat of starvation. We've got enough medical care to live most people a decent life span.

Now we can afford to reign in the excesses and transition to something more equitable.
