A white supremacist nearly shot up an HBCU today and ended up killing three Black people but I can barely find any discussions about this going on in the fediverse. This is what I'm talking about.

@BlackAzizAnansi

It's a shame the anniversary of the DC March was overshadowed by yet another mass shooting.

It's a feature of American culture now.

I don't think that the timing was an accident.

I tend to agree but it's just another sticky note on a neon blimp of racist signaling at this point. We've gathered enough data to identify the problem.

@BlackAzizAnansi Total disgust from Scotland! It amazes us why so many Americans support gun ownership. Tackle this and you have a solution. Look at the rest of the first world. Gun crime is 1% of the USA's!

@BlackAzizAnansi I found about it on the fediverse!

batyalee,

@BlackAzizAnansi Awful story. I don’t find much big national news in the fediverse. But Jen Psaki (Sunday morning show on MSNBC) talked about it today in chilling tones and even if it wasn’t at the top of the page, @washingtonpost had it too. So grateful that the terrorist didn’t gain access to the college.

katrinakatrinka,

@BlackAzizAnansi
I've seen a lot about it, but I follow a lot of journalists, advocates, and historians.

I’m pissed and it should be talked about more

@BlackAzizAnansi I am finding a number of conversations here on mastodon. They aren’t full of rebooted anger, but sincere questions about why we are where we are.

All I have to offer the discussion is that I am grateful my adult kids got themselves and my grandchildren out of Jacksonville in 2021.

fuzzycuca7,

@BlackAzizAnansi For the record there was a lot of discussion about the shooting earlier in the day. You're right though not much now.

Homoevolutis0,

@BlackAzizAnansi Are we on the same fediverse?

@BlackAzizAnansi I didn't see media coverage focusing on the racist motivations of the shooter until recently on NPR, even though it appears very obvious (left manifesto, painted swastikas on rifle, etc.).

jenniferdeseo,

@BlackAzizAnansi Local TV reporter on MSNBC this AM described the university as “historically Black Christian college.” Maybe the school is a Christian school, but methinks MSM doesn’t know what HBCU means, much less its significance in this act of terrorism.

Reply guys to this post are reaching catastrophic numbers.

SuperJerrBear81,

@BlackAzizAnansi I get where you're coming from. There doesn't seem to be much discussion, just news article postings. I hate the fact that I'm at the point where news of a racially motivated shooting is no longer surprising. I'm also tired of those who throw around the excuse, "It's too soon to talk about solutions! Let the families grieve before we talk about solutions!"

Then, there's another mass shooting. Anyone attempting to discuss solutions to the problem is shut down yet again

BlackAzizAnansi,
@BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to avatar

@venitamathias Discussions and posts are different though. I see plenty of posts about the actual story but it's hard for me to find actual discussions that are going on about it.

venitamathias,

@BlackAzizAnansi Obviously, the Black American presence in the fediverse is small in comparison to the centralised social media sites. That should not preclude discussion of Black American cultural/political issues. We have to be our own advocates.

venitamathias,
@venitamathias@masto.ai avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi Point taken and agreed. I have been looking for posts and discussion on Vivek Ramaswamy equating Ayanna Presley and Ibram Kendi's words to modern KKK. We could discuss why some incidents are not discussed beyond one word exclamations or gottcha responses as compared to others. I've seen pieces of that discussion floating around for awhile.

@BlackAzizAnansi it is second item on the BBC news site at the time of writing, and explicitly calls out the racism of the event, but I'm a Brit, I don't feel I can comment on this because it will just be an angry "you know what you need to do and mass shootings are going to keep happening until you do it," which I acknowledge is a very simplistic take and doesn't take into account America's very long and very weird relationship with guns, or the racism of this event.

SometimesIGetBored,

@BlackAzizAnansi it's all I'm seeing in my feed now. Maybe folks were late to the party

Paxxi,

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm not arguing against your point, just adding a data point.
When I got up just now the first thing I saw in my feed was two posts about it. Not nearly the volume of old Twitter but on the positive side, not entirely quiet

@BlackAzizAnansi Theory: because there are no algorithms, posts about the shooting don't go far. The lack of major news outlets with Mastodon accounts exacerbates the condition.

My timeline was filled earlier with posts about it, but many were not shared/reboosts.

What is the best way to address this kind of news in the absence of algorithms and major news outlets in federated space?

@BlackAzizAnansi least you are here.

A horrible tragedy. The Nazis are out there being encouraged by other Nazis and Nazi trolls. Out of the 1000s wannabes there is bound to be one that is going to be a mass murderer.
