Periodic reminder to not use Google Chrome (they’re moderating bookmarks now) https://strangeobject.space/@silvermoon82/110969122337810598

Use Firefox or Safari, they have proper end-to-end encryption (browser maker can’t read the data) of bookmarks and other private and personal browsing information (like your passwords!).

I can’t stress enough just how ridiculous it is that most of you just hand Google your passwords to everything from your bank accounts to porn sites.

thomasfuchs,
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io avatar

And for the love of science, don’t recommend Brave, which is run by a homophobe (Brendan Eich) backed by a Nazi (Peter Thiel)

ridn,

@insanj what browser are you currently using?

owen3d,
@owen3d@fosstodon.org avatar

@thomasfuchs
I use but if you must use a Chrome-based browser, seems to be one of the better options.

avoidswoop,

@thomasfuchs The opinions of the makers don't affect me, as long as it is open source. And I think you are over exaggerating the situation

What does science have to do with it?

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs I don't get why brave gets so much mention these days. They seem to have shut down the only semi good idea they had of automatic micro payments to creators for browsing their stuff (even if it was with dumb crypto crap)

Everything else it does is a browser extension away

breiter,
@breiter@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs and built around a bizarre crypto scheme

gregc,

@thomasfuchs
I confess I don't fully understand the obcession some have about avoiding Chrome, without adding the "need" to avoid Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Android and the all the other Google products with equal emphsis.

VeloBuc,

@thomasfuchs I use KeePass and KeyPassRpc to handle passwords.

railmeat,
@railmeat@fosstodon.org avatar

@thomasfuchs
Letting Google Chrome, or Google anything know your passwords seems like a very bad idea to me. I use Bitwarden, I have been happy with it.

abhimanyudhiman,

@thomasfuchs Quite right. Plus, Chrome is just a Google-ised version of the Chromium browser. Lastly, Firefox whizzes as compared to Chrome. It has fantastic shortcuts, too e.g. ctrl + shift + c, closes all tabs in the current window.

baerjo,

@thomasfuchs anything Google should be dumped at this point.

cassolotl,
@cassolotl@eldritch.cafe avatar

@thomasfuchs It would not take very long to edit your post with something like "Edit: Sorry folks, this is about public link "collections" that Google have a responsibility to moderate; Google are not moderating bookmarks you save for your own personal private use." That would undo the misinformation that has been spread to, so far, the followers of 1,000 people through boosts.

tyarosh,
@tyarosh@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs This is crazy

PhilA,

@thomasfuchs First thing I do when I get a new laptop is to uninstall Chrome (I use Vivaldi which, I know, is a Chrome browser but without all the Google tracking)

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@thomasfuchs I'm slightly disappointed it seems very cumbersome to set up my own Mozilla Sync instance. Everything seems to be there, just nut put together in a reasonably installable way.

VivaldiBrowser from @Vivaldi is also a viable Option and has a Connection to Mastodon already build in. 😉😁

@thomasfuchs @Vivaldi hey Vivaldi, do you also collect our personal data? I hope not.

Vivaldi,

@tasinone @thomasfuchs

No, we don't.

tasinone,

@Vivaldi @thomasfuchs ❤️❤️❤️

tasinone,

@thomasfuchs how about Chromium based other browser, like Brave or Vivaldi? I really like Vivaldi and use both Vivaldi and Firefox.

Tbeauchamp,

@thomasfuchs
But safari is the new IE. Things just don't work.

thomasfuchs,

@Tbeauchamp what exactly doesn’t work? I’ve been using Safari as my main browser for 20 years now ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@thomasfuchs I use the Brave browser. It seems great. Does mostly what Chrome et al do but also seems to suppress ads.

@thomasfuchs I do use Firefox but I also use Google Drive installed on my computer and o worry constantly that that might be so much worse.

LaNaehForaday,

@thomasfuchs

ok ok!!! I finally just did it. I swapped to Firefox and made it my default! I hope you're happy now!

😜 🙃

I dont know why I get so used to one thing and never want to change just because Im used to it. Im closing out now to open into a new realm forever more and it IS about time!

atatassault,

@thomasfuchs

@Vivaldi You're chromium based, but do you support end-to-end Encryption of sync'd data?

Vivaldi,
@Vivaldi@vivaldi.net avatar

@atatassault @thomasfuchs
Yes, your synced Vivaldi browser data is end-to-end encrypted.
You'll find more info on our Help page - https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/sync/#Encryption_password.

@thomasfuchs It appalls me when I ask millennials or younger about privacy and/or data security and I get that blank look that says, "Who cares about my info."
