@KiwiEV did you see the AU car experts thing where they drove two 7 series one petrol and one EV between MEL and SYD and said it was cheaper and faster in a gas car.

I couldn't be bothered digging into it, but it does seem like it was about 5 years too late, but I guess they are still " on noes the EVs are bad"

Watch the video and you’ll know why he drove it down to 2%. Didn’t really have an option.

Given the additional up-front cost of the EV over the ICE vehicle, if you don’t have solar panels on your house the EV is a joke, dollar-for-dollar.
And our governments are only looking for ways to add more taxes to EV’s. :suspicious:

Does the automatic update for work for anyone else? I've never had it work successfully and it bricks the system, and I always have to take the configuration backup and restore it on a fresh install every time.

What's the deal? Is it something I'm doing wrong?

owen3d,
@owen3d@fosstodon.org avatar

@wagesj45
Why would anyone be insane enough to enable that feature on a FIREWALL?!!
If you ask for trouble, then you shall receive it.

Pretty sure Netgate only put that function in there to take the piss - I'm sure it's not designed to work properly.

Thank the Lord!! Yes, that makes more sense now. Don't scare people like that!😂

And to answer your question, yes - I pretty much always do it that way and it's fine.
The only exception was moving back to the CE version from 'plus' recently due to Netgate changing their license terms.

@decryption know anything about the possibility of running an iwatch with an android phone?

owen3d,
@owen3d@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonoabroad @decryption
If you want a good option with Android that has a battery that lasts more than 12 minutes, get a Garmin.
The battery on mine lasts 12 days. More expensive ones with solar charging can last up to 35 days.

If you do end up with an apple watch, get the cheapest one they sell, as once the battery is rooted, so is the watch.

    I live in inner and have just been visited by a door-to-door worker from 60Shades asking to install energy saving shower heads and door seals for free. Apparently they go door-to-door because people don't pick up unknown spam calls any more. The worker is getting paid virtually nix commission for each call but bonus if he installs something.

    1. I hate spam calls
    2. I am suspicious of unsolicited door-to-door sales putting pressure on you to make a decision immediately - a tactic that makes you vulnerable to bad decisions.
    3. I don't like companies employing workers to do this rotten job, especially if they are not paid well. They are going to be vulnerable to abuse.

    I had a short chat and politely declined the service. This looks like it is being done through a Victorian government scheme via private companies.

    What are your thoughts on this scenario and door-to-door sales generally?

    owen3d,
    @owen3d@fosstodon.org avatar

    @perkinsy
    I agree with your points, but like @fladdle, I've had a couple where they've offered something I was going to buy - and I know this scheme is active - so I've accepted.

    It's not the fault of the door knockers for the reasons you mentioned - I blame the successive gov'ts for not promoting these activities sufficiently.

    Having said that, I don't blame anyone for not opening their door.
    The ones I have accepted I've looked at and figure I can "handle them" if something goes South. 😉

    dhrystone, to apple
    @dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

    Okay. ONE improvement with the that you don’t get on other streaming OS’s. You can switch the video output to lock into 4K SDR rather than or +. The reason you would do this is because several series/shows, especially on AppleTV+ (the streaming content service, not the hardware) like Invasion, The Last Thing He Told Me and Foundation, are inexplicably dark as hell when viewed in DV. Viewing in SDR brightens the output considerably. Same with Terminal List. Incredibly dark.

    I have no idea why these shows are mastered at such a woeful brightness level but at least the AppleTV has this “solution” for it.

    And I hate that you have to turn off the main attracting factors of modern TVs (DoVi color breadth, audio etc) in order to compensate for quirks. Shit really should just be produced properly and WORK properly out of the box without having to fiddle the fuck out of config after config to just get nice audio and video. 🤬
