@evan I’m in Canada but if I could have voted I would have voted New Zealand. I’m sure it has it’s flaws but from here it looks like it has all the things I love in a small, compact package.
Also we’ve been watching Taskmaster New Zealand and their comedians are amazingly deranged.
@evan Oof, unexpectedly harsh on Australia! Fair enough though, New Zealand and Canada both have lots of great stuff that we don’t have. UK not popular right now? Yeah, I get it.
@evan because My son is an adult with Down syndrome, all of these countries say on paper they wouldn’t “take us.” We are very likely trapped here. Asterisk is that I’ve heard from real people, Canada would be difficult, but maybe possible. 😕
@evan
New Zealand- they're accepting climate change immigration status refugees Australia refused entry which speaks volumes about compassion The world needs love- each and every one of us !
@evan
Can I recall my vote? I missed the resident bit. I already moved but I chose New Zealand because they managed to coordinate well on covid from my understanding.
Not the UK: Terf-land. Brexit. Although I've been treated nicely through the airport, at least.
Not Australia: friendlyjordies
Not Canada: Conservative party is platforming on Terf rhetoric.
@evan this one is shaping up to really surprise me. Due to proximity I expected Canada to do well, but would not have guessed New Zealand to place as high.
@evan if I moved it would have to be because I no longer felt safe here in Chicago or could no longer access trans health resources here (or possibly because it suddenly got really easy to move, but I think that's somewhat doubtful that would ever happen). Canada is the only place on the list I know would be an improvement. UK is a hell no. Idk how the other two stack up, but I don't think I want to move that far away if I can help it.
The point of the poll is to think about moving to another country, and consider what it would entail. Maybe also thinking about what you need from the country you live in, what these countries have to offer, and what your priorities are.
There are a lot of other options besides these four choices: none of them, all of them, don't move, move somewhere else, die, upload mind to a computer, move to space.
@pthenq1 Choosing from the constrained list can be helpful for creative thinking. People who want to order off the menu are welcome to just reply. But I only get four slots in my polls, so I try to get maximum optionality within a small set of choices.
@evan Canada is ok. But it seems like American right wing is infecting Canada. Thus, I preferred to avoid any place with MAGA influence. New Zealand seems to be less right wing crap.
All of the above? None of the above? It all depends. U.K. politics isn't exactly what it could be, but its proximity to Europe is very appealing. As far as Canada goes are we talking about Vancouver? (in a heartbeat) Montreal? (Sure) Toronto? (Okay) Winnipeg? (Brrr.) Lethbridge? (Hard pass) Similar questions re Oz and NZ.
@gwhilts so, yeah, the point of these polls is that you do all this math in your head, think it through, and then come up with an answer for yourself and push the button.
@gwhilts if you're sharing your thought process, fine. It helps me a lot if you say that, though. Right now it sounds like you want me to make a 200-page form for every town and village in these countries and others, under various circumstances, which is a ridiculous request.
I've been there, it seems fine, despite suffering from some of the same problems as the US
I should be able to travel to and from the USA by train, or theoretically by bicycle. Pretty important since I refuse to use airplanes (or cars), and I'd want to see my family in the US.
I think I might like NZ better than Canada, but I've never been, and it would mean leaving everything and everyone I've ever known on a more permanent basis.
