A very bothersome thing about the ”no smartphones under 16” movement is, along with the imo misleading virtual-real world dichotomy, is how it ignores the independency and agency of children. Kids learn to drive cars earlier in some places.

@jhilden As a youth worker and youth research student, this movement is mind boggling. Smartphones and the web in general plays a huge role in social relationships for the youth, even more than for us adults. Youngsters need access to their peers 🦾

@scottsantens The more I think about UBI, the more sense it makes in today’s world. People could take a step back from capitalism and pursue a more sustainable lifestyle, or, be more brave about finding work that is less soul destroying than the current job.

And this is obviously why the capitalist system doesn’t want UBI. Where would it get the slaves from?

@husku @anuko Haidt puhuu käsittääkseni samoista tilastoista, joista Jean Twenge kirjoitti kirjan iGen. Siinä ainakin katsottiin irrallisia tilastoja ja vedettiin niistä kausaalista johtopäätöstä. Tosiaan nuo jenkkien talouskriisit, ilmastokriisi, sodat, huoltajien tiukempi teinien rajoittaminen (eivät saa enää hengailla kylillä ja ostareilla) jne eivät varmaan vaikuta teinien hyvinvointiin lainkaan 🤦🏽‍♂️

Kaupallisissa someissa on paljon pahaa, ja osalla nuorista menee huonommin kuin aiemmin, mutta isolla osalla menee taas tosi hyvin. Puhuttaispa siitäkin välillä.

En tiedä kuinka monta tällaista juttua Metasta/Facebookista pitää tapahtua, että ihmiset lopettavat firman palveluiden käyttämisen.

Jotenkin ihmetyttää, kuinka monet ihmiset boikotoivat yrityksiä niiden epäettisten toimien takia, mutta samat ihmiset käyttävät kuitenkin Metan palveluita ja luovuttavat kaiken henkilökohtaisen tiedon heille ihan vapaaehtoisesti.

Joka kerta kun Meta on oikeudenkäynnissä ja joutuu paljastamaan sisäisiä dokumentteja, sieltä paljastuu jotain todella synkkää.

Nyt paljastui, että Meta naamioi salauksen purkamisen ja man-in-the-middle -hyökkäyksen VPN-sovellukseksi, jotta se voisi kaivella käyttäjien tietoja myös silloin kun he käyttävät kilpailijoiden sovelluksia (Snapchat, YouTube, Amazon).

Tuo firma on vaan niin paha ja mätä.

Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

@RickiTarr Both I think. Major and minor chords seem to have an effect on toddlers and then some arrangement related choices have a learned association for sure.

Theory: societies without a commonly agreed external threat turn against themselves due to evolutionary biology.

There always have been a minority of people who experience the world through threats - these were the warrior/defenders when we needed constant defense.

As societies experience extended peace, these warrior types seek new threats to defend against - lately turning against imaginary threats in their immediate surroundings.

AI is scary, and it can do a lot of scary things. It is also amazing, and can do things like get a Covid vaccine out faster, help people with disabilities, and help us figure out problems faster, and more efficiently. AI is a tool, and like all tools can be used as a weapon. Should we stop progress, because of the possibilities?

Also never ever ever forget none of this happens in a vacuum. The rich and powerful would love for you to be distracted by a tool, instead of the people wielding it. We cannot always control the rate of progress, but we can vote for people who want to regulate it.

@RickiTarr @kern I feel that as someone born in the 70’s I’m in a perfect position to get the best of both worlds, as when I was a kid using tech we had to figure out a lot of things ourselves to get it working. I’m a youth worker and I’ve seen how much harder problem solving can be to some teens, as they’re used to things that just work.

Just pondering here, as a long time tech enthusiast with no research to back my thoughts 😀

@jhilden Aah, that would work like a charm as an inventory system. Separate sheets for storage spaces and cupboards etc and a single linked sheet TO RULE THEM ALL.
