My husband had this tradition at his old job as a journalist where if they had to work a long night on the way out they delivered "the parting shots" things you can say that sound good on the surface... until you think about it.
"Bill? This has been a day I won't forget easily."
"Sarah? You really wrote one of the articles of all time."
"Jake? Tremendous effort tonight."
"It was a crazy night, and whenever it was at its worst? Well you were right there."
'Want to stay on here? I had a word with your Dean. He gave you a bloody good reference.’
‘Did he? What did he say?’
‘He said if I could get you to do any work for me I’d be lucky’, said Bill.

For a long time I thought that a certain Smashing Pumpkins lyric — "Today is the greatest day I've ever known" —changed in a later verse to "Today is the greatest day available", and I've hated Billy Corgan ever since I found out it was just a straight repeat.

And on Friday afternoons, I always shouted "stay fresh, cheese bags!" on my way out the door. Because of that one picture. It's not the same when we're working from home though.
@futurebird I've never used it but I'm just itching for the chance - it's from "Real Genius", and you say it to someone a little too amped up:
"You know, there are lots of decaffeinated brands that are just as tasty as the real thing."
@futurebird Yeep….I work in a restaurant & mine waffles between’try to not go crazy’ & actually this one I do between what’s else I’m doing,it’s pretending to be a zombie. Think ‘it’s been so busy I feel like a zombie’. Management knows. They don’t care enough to ask me to stop.
@futurebird for birthdays, I offer my "congratulations upon another successful orbit around your local stellar primary; I'm given to understand that this many in a row is a personal best for you" which simply sounds great and then you think about it and have more questions but I think the questions in this case are simply more absurd
