BRAIN ASPLODE!

I've never been able to spell "guarantee" correctly on the first try, and today I really looked at it to try to figure out why.

Which is when I realized that the opening "guar" sounds really close to "war" if you are someone who regularly says GUAO or GUËY.

Which is when I realized that a GUARANTEE is the SAME DAMN THING as a WARRANTY.

SAME. DAMN. WORD.

Fifty fucking years on this planet it took me to figure that out, ffs.

Today, a new baby is born into my growing fermentation family.

Considering on re-starting kombucha as well, although it's a bit too fiddly for my liking. But I do like it a lot. Kraut I tried to make once. That I don't like, but did get some from the store to teach myself to eat that too.

But sourdough and this are straightforward enough. Been fermenting from store-bought kefir for a few weeks and now moving on to the "real" stuff.

@Duusi Maybe you'd enjoy water kefir more than kombucha? If you haven't tried it already... It's dead simple because it's just water and sugar. My main problem was that the cycle is much faster (2-3 days) and I couldn't keep up with production! It also has a less funky taste than kombucha.

earthtoneone,
@earthtoneone@mstdn.social avatar

@Duusi It's so simple - really just plain sugar and water. Some directions say you need dried fruit and a lemon slice - they're not necessary, though a little acid can help.

Fun to participate in a panel on open source that was 100% women and had absolutely nothing to do with being a woman in open source. I hope one day this will be so commonplace I don't even notice it.

My husband had this tradition at his old job as a journalist where if they had to work a long night on the way out they delivered "the parting shots" things you can say that sound good on the surface... until you think about it.

"Bill? This has been a day I won't forget easily."
"Sarah? You really wrote one of the articles of all time."
"Jake? Tremendous effort tonight."
"It was a crazy night, and whenever it was at its worst? Well you were right there."

etc.

Do you have a "parting shot?"

Adventures with BeMyAI (8min): https://tink.uk/adventures-with-bemyai/
@tink tested BeMyAI, a feature added to BeMyEyes using chatGPT4 to describe a picture. It’s still hallucinating of course, but still impressive. Also, I totally want stir-fry vegetables for dinner tonight too now.

earthtoneone,
@earthtoneone@mstdn.social avatar

@stephaniewalter @tink Selfishly, my initial reaction was "oh darn, now I'll get even fewer calls!". But I'm sure that many people hesitate to ask for help from a human, so this could really lower barriers. It's a little scary though. I wish these AI assistants were built with a little more "humility" and were clear about their level of uncertainty.

earthtoneone,
@earthtoneone@mstdn.social avatar

@tink @stephaniewalter Oh, absolutely. I'm not a huge fan of the AI boom. But if they improved the UI, I could see this being somewhat useful.

earthtoneone,
@earthtoneone@mstdn.social avatar

Yeah, I guess I'm thinking of a user like my mother, who wouldn't use BME unless it was urgent, because she would be anxious about "bothering" a human. It would never function as well as a human, but it might increase access quite a bit. (IF they refined it to where it's more good than harm)

After the rousing success of -in-a-bag, I decided to try carrots-in-a-bag. It's only been a couple hours, but it's already bubbling away. (it did get a jump start from a little sauerkraut juice)

Heat-sealed bag of carrot sticks in brine with a sprig of parsley. If you look really close, near the top, you can see many tiny bubbles streaming up.

I think the thing I hate most about visiting people who live in suburbs are lawnmowers.

Honestly they are the worst. They make so much noise and you're burning fossil fuels to maintain something that is neither food, nor a cash crop. The entire idea of a lawn that needs this much resource is just beyond stupid.

At least switch to a push mower. When I visit my parents, I pull out the push mower I bought them. When neighbours see a gas powered mower out, they cross the street to avoid the noise and fumes. When they see me with my push mower, they stop to chat.

Lawnmowers are horribly antisocial and the lawn lovers don't even realize this.

earthtoneone,
@earthtoneone@mstdn.social avatar

@jann Come now, don't sealion. The majority of people who have mowers chose to buy gas over electric or manual, which have been available for decades. This isn't about the people who can't choose, but those who have had the choice for a very long time (long enough that there should be plenty of free and cheap secondhand options for folks who need them)
