When I said that the college athlete NIL law passing, transfer portal happening, hiring Black head coaches, and eventually, paying players would increase graduation rates and revenue for the NCAA, lots of y'all didn't believe me.

If you stayed up late watching Colorado vs CSU, now you get it.

Would you rather make:

A) 95% of $20 billion, but Black kids get next to nothing.

B) 50% of $50 billion, but you have to give $25 billion to Black people.

This math is surprisingly hard for racists.🤷🏿‍♂️

@mekkaokereke Racists have always been more interested in being mean to black people than in profits. Locking black people out of hotels, restaurants, etc during segregation literally was turning away money but they did it anyhow.

CStamp,

@badtux @mekkaokereke It's like the "I don't make cakes for gay weddings." The wedding industry is huge and now gay folk are in the game? Huuuuge profit potential. Racists and bigots are really bad business people.

CarlMuckenhoupt,
@CarlMuckenhoupt@mastodon.social avatar

@badtux @mekkaokereke I don't know if I buy this in all cases. For a business like a hotel or a restaurant, serving minorities means losing the bigots who refuse to rub elbows with them. In a society where the bigots have most of the money, choosing the bigots isn't necessarily a bad business decision.

That was my first reaction. But I think the original statement holds true by and large

@CarlMuckenhoupt @badtux

Maybe?

But there are very few businesses that really would make more money with only racist customers.

A] Racist customers

vs

B] Normal, non-racist white customers, plus Black customers.

The math almost always works out to choose the "non-racist white people" side♥️

Because the actions you need to take to prevent Black customers, loses you rich white clientele that don't want to be associated with racists. Like this

@CarlMuckenhoupt @badtux

Both Amazon and Sears grew huge on the principal of:

"I can take Black people's money, and non-racist white people's money too! Hey competitor, thanks for being racist and pushing your customers to me! 🤑"

https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/109852961583118407

The non-racist side is the money side, for almost all businesses. There is more money on the non-racist side.

(🤔Unless you are selling klan hoods or nazi plates or MAGA hats something).

@mekkaokereke And it’s not even like they haven’t more than earned that money with their production on the field or the court. College football coaches are still the highest paid government employees in many states in this country. They and the schools just aren’t the only ones profiting—and the NIL money isn’t even coming out of their pockets!

My father had to deal with the NCAA as part of his job. He held them in a level of contempt that was reserved for very few others.

finley,

@mekkaokereke Being a trans woman who has trauma from living in "football is life" country, my knee-jerk response is "Let's just do away with college football altogether. Problem solved."

But I'm also someone who's been banned from powerlifting because I happened to be born with the wrong genitals, so I get what not having equal access to sports does to a person. Sports is about more than moving a weight or a ball. It's about community.

@mekkaokereke so much of racism is about maintaining relative rather than absolute status - it is absolutely what Heather McGhee observed in the Sum of Us that white people can be convinced to destroy their own benefits in order to win the prize of denying them to Black people

Heather McGhee wrote a nice little book about this dynamic, "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together"

@mekkaokereke Math was never the strong point of racists. IMO racists see anything that goes to a person of color (they call it “given to” like it’s “unearned”) as being taken away from them personally out of their own wallet. It doesn’t matter what it is. Free school lunch? “I don’t want to pay for that.” Appropriate money for collegiate athletes? “I don’t want to pay for that.” Healthcare for themselves (ACA) that also goes to Black people? “I don’t want to pay for that.”

caragraph,
@caragraph@lor.sh avatar

@mekkaokereke 'give to black people' seems to be a four word phrase containing a four letter word racists can't even begin to mentally imagine

Yes college football is still exploitive. And yes football in general is still a horrible sport. It's like playing tennis, but before every volley, you hit yourself in the head full force with a bowling ball, and in the knees with a baseball bat. That's just... not smart. I said what I said.

But... if you're going to do college football, try not to be absolutely disgusting and racist human beings about it?

Judmarc,
@Judmarc@vivaldi.net avatar

@mekkaokereke "College" football teams (if still allowed after continuing research into brain trauma) should simply be minor league pro teams with colleges allowed to be named sponsors (with a sponsorship $ cap). Very surprised a parallel to slavery hasn't been drawn more frequently for unpaid college athletes.

@mekkaokereke I always thought it odd that academic institutions would spend more annually on concussion machines that operate continuously for months at a time than on cross-cultural festival events that happen maybe four hours per year, but might make you fat if you wait in like again for a third serving of that particular culture's delightful pastry with the nuts and honey in it.
