It astounds me how effective the plastics industry was at duping the public as far back as the “crying indian” ad. We are a nation of suckers. We always were.

“Plastic experts say recycling is a scam. Should we even do it anymore?”

@shoq I just toss plastics into the trash these days since that's where it ends up anyhow. Cardboard and paper recycling, however, is not a scam -- most cardboard boxes and brown paper bags include significant amounts of recycled fibers.

Hunter Biden's lawyers confirm (and cite) my reporting: David Weiss claimed that Keith Ablow's sawdust was Hunter Biden's cocaine.

@emptywheel "Mistaking sawdust for cocaine sounds more like a story line from a 1980s Police Academy comedy than what should be expected from a high-profile prosecution by the U.S. Department of Justice." LOL @ sick burn by Hunter Biden's lawyers.

Personally I'm running a $140 UHF/VHF aerial for my 40 watt mobile base in my house but mostly from laziness. I could have built just as good an antenna from aluminum tubing.

@darnell I have checked into Threads twice. Once I logged in, looked around, and logged out. The second time I logged in, accepted a friend request from a long-time friend, and logged out. Mastodon seems to work better for me, except for the problem that you can't do a news feed on Mastodon about a specific breaking news item because it has no global search function.

Suspect in father’s decapitation ‘went off the rails’ in college, those who knew him say

@knittingknots2 Let's put it bluntly: This kid was radicalized by right-wing media until he committed a terrorist act against a Federal worker. This isn't a pure "went off the rails" situation. This is preachers of radicalization taking advantage of a vulnerable person to radicalize him into a terrorist murderer. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/suspect-fathers-decapitation-went-rails-college-knew-say-rcna136647

@AlSweigart A friend had a cat that taught himself to use the toilet. That is the only scenario I can think of where a cat using a toilet is acceptable. The cat's name was Reuben. He had an artist paint a portrait of the cat while the cat was still alive, which hung in his hallway for years after Reuben died of old age. He never got another cat because he claimed that there would never be another cat as smart as Reuben.

Trump is a wannabe dictator with no actual governmental power right now outside of what damage he’s already done. Let’s not give him any more.

Please vote. Not registered? Register here: https://vote.gov/

Talk to like minded family and friends and take them with you.

And support Joe Biden because that’s the choice.

I say this every chance I get, but the coming AI apocalypse I’m worried about isn’t sentient machines causing wars or something, it’s customer service being increasingly outsourced to algorithms that are arbitrary, impossible to understand and offer no recourse for folks impacted by their decisions.

Case in point, these poor souls who had their banking accounts shut down for no reason with no explanation of why and no recourse. Fucking infuriating.

If a transgression by a single employee breaches your network, you're doing it wrong.

@kcarruthers @arstechnica I briefly looked at using Octa for SSO for a product, but quickly realized that Keycloak did everything we needed for free. I honestly don't understand why Octa has so many big business customers despite not really adding that much value. Especially for Office365 customers who already have Azure AD or whatever Microsoft is calling it this week.

A Jewish friend of mine calculated how many Palestinians who voted for Hamas back in 2006 could still be alive and then what percentage of the current Palestinians that would be. It worked out to maybe 11%.

The notion that all Gaza Palestinians deserve to be killed by Israel because they voted for Hamas is ridiculous.

Once more, for those in the back:

Being "non-racist" is not a state of being for which you get a gold star. It's a process which requires continual self-examination. You can't just start with the assumption that you are "not racist" - you have to put in your work, and keep doing so.

And don't do it because you crave "recognition" for your efforts, but because it's a basic part of being a decent human being.

    badtux,
    @badtux@mastodon.social avatar

@juergen_hubert The best thing to do is assume that you are racist and try not to be. Because most people have their implicit biases that they don’t recognize immediately and need to watch out for, because we grow up in a society, and the society we grow up in is full of implicit and institutional biases.

He is such a happy cat, and that makes me happy.
