“Anyone invoking rising life expectancy as a reason to delay Social Security benefits is, in effect, saying that aging janitors must keep working (or be cast into extreme poverty) because bankers are living longer.”

@NinaBernstein1

Republican billionaire donors dropped the average life expectancy of Americans by 5 years.

The 1% is quite proud of that fact.
They killed 1.18 Americans to shave a few points off tax revenues.

Gun violence. Covid.

The rich believe more Americans need to die because they oppose public health care system.

@NinaBernstein1 She'll shill for ANYONE AT ALL

deborahh,

@NinaBernstein1 really? Rising life expectancy?

It's dropping in Canada, since 2020.
I doubt it's much different in the US?

@deborahh Life expectancy has definitely dropped in the US. The Republican argument is that it’s still higher than it was when Social Security was created, when the average guy dropped dead before collecting much.

@NinaBernstein1 in the US life expectancy is not rising, it is declining.

So it's not even true.

CitizenZ,

@dangrsmind @NinaBernstein1 well, the covid drop effects the entire planet. To be fair, you would need to weigh that against other countries to determine if the US has dropped more or less..

flattliner,

@CitizenZ @dangrsmind @NinaBernstein1 Easily answered I’m afraid - US life expectancy plateaued from the turn of the century, then plummeted after Covid.

craftycat,

@flattliner @CitizenZ @dangrsmind @NinaBernstein1 I had no idea the difference between the US and Europe was THAT drastic...

flattliner,

@craftycat @CitizenZ @dangrsmind @NinaBernstein1 It is certainly dramatic, and begs the question, why?

flattliner,

@GatekeepKen @craftycat @CitizenZ @dangrsmind @NinaBernstein1 Guns, true enough; Covid was late in the decline but hey, 41% obesity can’t help; climate disasters though? FFS, been washing your brain or something? 💦🧠

Having read around the subject, some blame a suicide surge, but just look at that graph - it’s not a small difference, it’s fucking huge!

@craftycat @CitizenZ @dangrsmind @flattliner @GatekeepKen The term deaths of despair comes from Princeton economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton….The fastest rising death rates among Americans were from drug overdoses, suicide, and alcoholic liver disease. Deaths from these causes have increased between 56% and 387%, depending on the age cohort, over the past two decades, averaging 70,000 per year. https://www.statnews.com/2021/12/29/deaths-of-despair-unrecognized-tragedy-working-class-immiseration/
