@collin
No, I don’t want to burden anyone with whatever their generation is supposed to be.
What is a baby boomer supposed to be? A millennial?
What do they actually act like?
I’m not a type and I don’t expect anyone else to be.
@cass_m If it makes you feel any better, I watched a documentary on Woodstock the other day, and I can't imagine it wasn't a pretty miserable experience.
@collin As someone born at the tail end of what demographers, not marketers, call the "baby boom", I am here to tell you the Apollo 11 mission had a completely different impact on an almost 6 y/o me that it would have on a 23 y/o (who may have been listening to it on Armed Forces Radio in a jungle somewhere).
@VE2UWY I'm not here to argue that this is a perfect system and that I don't think the concept of generations is kind of silly. I really just wanted to get an idea of how old Mastodon is and felt like these categories were ones that people are used to seeing.
@collin I am! 😜 I just hate the naming of the "generations". If I was born, say, in 65 vs 63 I'd be Gen X and my only gripe would be ... well, probably still being lumped in with the damn Boomers. :-)
@VE2UWY You know, I didn’t put years on it so people could just pick based on their own criteria and then all the responses were that it wasn’t clear enough 😂
@collin Never felt/feel as "old" as the people in "my age" and the way they use to think.#mindset 😬 Still don't think of myself as "an adult" or even an elder.🤔 When the people i was on tour with started to be in an age they could've been my grandkids... i still felt the same way.🤔
So that Baby Boomer box doesn't fit at all, not even close in any way (thinking, music i am listening to....). Although... my body starts to slowly agree 😉 i am not sure what box i'd tick considering how old i feel or see myself.
@collin I'm at the border between Gen Z and Millennial. But I'm more closer to the former.
Also, I'm shocked that I'm seeing far fewer Gen Z numbers compared to other generations so far. Maybe the digital town-square of that generation is TikTok...
@collin@lippard Less that 45 days from a border, but, when you look at the so-called attributes of each group, one over the other is a pretty clear picture of my childhood.
"Although generations are a convenient heuristic for quickly, if inaccurately, understanding otherwise complex patterns of human behavior, they fail to adequately capture the diversity of the individuals being grouped together."
Despite my boosting of this survey — I was, like the original poster, interested in this question of the age-demographic breakdown hereabouts — I too regard most generational cultural analysis as pretty weak beer
I mean, these generational divisions were mostly invented and/or ardently promoted by marketing folk
It’s not about truly understanding people: it’s about selling to them
