The imposing Classical style entrance to the former Hillhead High School on Cecil Street in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by Hugh and David Barclay, it was built in 1883. It later became Hillhead Primary School and is now flats.

A late 19th Century tenement with a distinctive corner tower at Albert Cross in Pollokshields. Until about five years ago, this junction, in keeping with the Glasgow tradition, was marked by three distinctive corner towers. Since then, two have been lost to fire, and with the ground floor shop seemingly lying empty, there is a high risk this one will suffer a similar fate.

New Israeli attack on another tent camp near Rafah just days after the attack that caused an inferno

On Tuesday, Israeli forces struck a group of tents at the al-Mawasi area west of Rafah, killing at least 21 people & injuring dozens.

The area had been designated a "humanitarian zone" by Israeli forces, who had encouraged Palestinians in Rafah to seek shelter in the area.

A few miles after Bruar lumps, not drops, of rain greeted us.
Temp fell by 12 degC!

Another rather unique Glasgow tenement, this time on the corner of Langside Road and Queen's Drive on the city's Southside. Designed by W.M Whyte in a French Renaissance style, but with a statue of Liberty on the top, it was built in 1885.

You'll often hear it said there are five statues of Liberty in Glasgow. However, in reality, this is the only one as all the others are different allegorical female figures.

Cleaned and uncleaned tenements on Albert Avenue in the Queen's Park area of Glasgow. Until a cleaning programme was initiated in the 1970s, most of Glasgow's traditional sandstone buildings were black from many decades of accumulated soot and grime. These tenements show what buildings looked like before and after they were cleaned.

Kelvingrove House Student Accommodation in the West End of Glasgow. Built on a gap site created when the Saint Enoch Free Church was demolished after being damaged by a bomb in 1941, its architectural style and size blend in relatively well with the surrounding traditional tenements. If we could do this in the not-too-distant past, why does it seem that all the new ones being constructed now are overly-large soulless generic boxes which stick out like a sore thumb?

Craignestock Mansions on London Road in the Calton area of Glasgow. This block of tenements, complete with rooftop drying green, was constructed a round 1900. In Glasgow, the epithet 'Mansions' was generally used to indicate a higher quality tenement building, as in Charing Cross Mansions or Anniesland Mansions.

You only begin to appreciate just how many fireplaces were required to keep old buildings, like Glasgow's Pollok House, warm when you start counting the chimneys. In this case, there's more than thirty. That's a lot of grates to be cleared of the previous day's ashes each morning before the fires could be re-set in time for the family getting up for breakfast.

Well, having spent two days in a state of depressed panic caused in part because I believed I had a major hardware fault on my big computer, I've gone through things carefully this morning and found that I have not. Linux is running fine, and the video card is running fine under Linux. So the problems I had must have been a plug not fully inserted(?)
