Working on a new @pixelfed resource website, in between other things.

We already have a Help Center built in to every pixelfed instance but it's more difficult to update across instances, translate and doesn't have search, this will do all that and more!

P.S - The design is based off https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.3/examples/starter-template/, a custom font and a little color go a long way ๐Ÿ˜Ž

penguintech1,

@dansup @pixelfed I'm patiently waiting for Pixelfed stable apk built ๐Ÿ™ˆ.. also hope it will be released on Fdroid as well ๐Ÿฅบ

In this weekโ€™s and News video, we have the new App Store that will demote deb packages, we have the alpha of 45, and proposing to add telemetry in a future release.

Letโ€™s take a look:

https://youtu.be/F-xh7XKsRIo

penguintech1,

@thelinuxEXP Wow Gnome is really killing it, this update on the contrary to what you said, is kinda huge because everything is under the hood, really excited to see it come to Fedora and Nobara ( my favorite Distros ) ( Nobara usually takes 2 months period to get updated )

also, hope things settle in France, these riots and invasive surveillance laws ( I mean they already arrested 7 people for nothing ) is really concerning, and I don't wanna sound pessimistic , but these are the signs of collapse ( guys on r/collapse would def agree ), but you're doing your part by getting the message out there, most people don't care about privacy, and laws like these pass because they don't get that much coverage and again people don't care

Did you know that each Mastodon server has its own custom emoji?

Each server admin can upload images :cate: or animations :rickroll: which are available to anyone on that server. Ask your admin if you want a particular emoji added to your server.

To access them on an app, click the app's own emoji button (usually a smiley ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ). For normal emoji, click the picker on your phone's keyboard.

To access them on the web, click the emoji picker in the post writing box (which looks like this ๐Ÿ˜‚ ).

As someone who doesn't need encrypted email super often, is ProtonMail worth the hassle to use as a general email provider?

penguintech1,

@brainblasted I would say, yes @protonmail is worth the hassle, they actually are making an effort in making their products look good and perform well, instead of just using privacy as selling point, ( which doesn't work for most people, unfortunately ), who ever is making their UX and branding def deserve a raise

Curious about how our newly launched password manager, Proton Pass, works?

Here's a short video that shows the main features in and all the ways it makes you more secure online. Proton Pass is open-source, end-to-end encrypted, and available for free.

@protonmail PLEASE ๐Ÿ™ be on @fdroidorg

penguintech1,

@darklightxi this app is still under development but it's very promising.

the icon for me is a square with white background, and the loading posts is a hit or miss, but still it's way better then all other clients I have tried in it's current state, nice

BOI: Motherโ€™s maiden name?

Me: LjwOtrNGIgpJlJE

BOI: So this is the problem: We need your motherโ€™s maiden name.

Me: I just gave it. This is a security question and I provided you with a password.

BOI: No, that wonโ€™t work, we need her name.

Me: Wowโ€ฆ OKโ€ฆ Please cancel my application.โ€

We might unintentionally end up being the first company to ship a >140W USB-PD 3.1 power adapter?

This Apple Vision thing looks like it could be interesting in some use cases, but no one is ever wearing that thing in an office or in public.

Like seriously, itโ€™s just as ridiculous as any other VR headset.

penguintech1,

@thelinuxEXP It will have it's own audience eventually ( mostly Apple fanboys and Youtubers like MKBHD hyping it for them ), but I doubt any free software advocate or privacy conscious person would buy that thing.

like you said before, "they don't solve any problem", why would I put a VR headset to have an online meeting ( where people don't have legs ๐Ÿ˜‚ ), while I can do it in jitsi

penguintech1,

@thelinuxEXP tbh, the only thing I like about it, is it gives more monitors, but at that price I'll just buy a real monitor... :mastodon_oops:

penguintech1,

@SineNomineAnonymous @dogmuffins EXACTLY, I was on Reddit saying the exact same thing yesterday, why don't people just start using that better alternative ( that doesn't target them with intrusive ads ) but when FB first started out, I remember everyone was asking how to sign up, ( they didn't think no one is using it ), I think "follow the crowd" mentality is the problem when it comes to mass adoption :rickdrink:

We all have preconceived notions about on our desktop operating systems. But how much data does , , and even really collect?

Letโ€™s look at all the things they know about you, what they do with the data, and how you can disable most, or all of that:

https://youtu.be/MMc5zgALLiY

penguintech1,

@thelinuxEXP saying they ( & ) need Personal Identifiable information ( Aka Telemetry ) to fix their OS, is like saying I need to know where you went with your vehicle? who was riding with you? what did you guys/girls talk about ? what are you carrying inside your trunk ? in order for me to fix the Engine ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

FediFollows, to random

All the accounts recommended by FediFollows are active and have posted recently. If an account looks blank or inactive, you can check its original page to see what the latest version of it really looks like:

https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/

Once you follow them, all their posts from that moment onwards will be visible to your entire server.

The reason this situation happens so often on my recommendations is that I tend to recommend new accounts with few followers.

None of them are actually inactive!

penguintech1,

@FediFollows I didn't know I can do that, thank you

FediThing, to random

Saying the Fediverse has to grow through centralisation is like saying a vegetarian restaurant has to grow by selling meat.

Alternatively, here's an analogy for car lovers: you want to drive somewhere quickly, do you just instantly press the pedal down as far as it will go? No, you have a look and see what's ahead, and occasionally slow down because you want to survive the journey. You will not get anywhere quickly if you crash.

Why be on the Fediverse if you want it centralised? What's the point? Why not just use one of the many, many centralised networks out there?

And why are there so many people arguing for growth at any cost? Have they not seen what this did to all centralised social networks?

penguintech1,

@FediThing I don't feel that Mastodon is decentralized at all, I just search for a profile and it appears even if it's on another server... :fediverse:

Me getting paranoid about companies would take a toll on my health, thus I try to ignore concerns and debates about companies and focus on my own things... But it's hard without having to notice "Google did this" or "Microsoft did that".

penguintech1,

@asahi95 Headlines can be dramatic in order to be catchy, and on the other hand, it shows how low-level these companies can go, in order to harvest people's data, however if you go degoogled, or de-Microsoft you don't have to worry that much
