@AntennaPod I ditched Pocketcasts for AntennaPod just a months ago and I never looked back. The most advanced function I'm loving so far is cross device synching powered by the app and my desktop podcast client . It works like a charm: I can start listening to an episode on my desktop and continue were I left off on my android phone using AntennaPod. Amazing. Thank you guys for this wonderful piece of software!

I have to say, @kde Plasma is truly amazing, it offers so much customization that I wouldn't call it a desktop environment but a framework.

However, perhaps it should be cleaned up so that the novice user can find themselves more comfortable and free to customize it as they sees fit.

neffscape,
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@mirkobrombin @Linux that's a nice idea. Personally the most frustrating user experience I had in Plasma was trying to create a top panel with global menus and failing multiple times to add plasmoids into the panel (they don't immediately show up, so I end up adding them multiple times). Also panel resizing is really weird.

@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@mirkobrombin oh wow! That's real good news! Thanks for the update @niccolove. I'm really looking forward to KDE6!

I deeply regret buying a laptop for Linux with a hidpi screen. With two external 1080p screens, the scaling is all over the place and barely usable. Dangerously close to getting rid of the laptop and replacing it with a 1080p display one.

Google has announced a "Mint" color for the Pixel 8 series (only available from the Google Store with 128GB storage), alongside a new Pixel Feature Drop for January 2024! This Feature Drop is a bit unusual since it isn't accompanied by a new QPR update, but it does bring some interesting features.

Huh, I almost fell for what I assume is a phishing SMS. I do indeed have an O2 contract expiring on 20.01.2024 and O2 often spams me with SMS messages from random numbers.

But here the link is fishy! Instead of o2online.de which is their actual domain, the domain here is de-simverwalten.digital and the line braking just hides this. Clever little bastards! I wonder how they know when my cancellation date is...

neffscape,
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@Techaltar little filthy bastards... that's impressive. I recently received a fraud email message masked as my company Exchange server. Basically they copied the server message you receive when you type the wrong email address and the message bumps back. They even attached a false copy of my original message. It was a trojan of course.

Remember to share positive posts, memes, etc. about open source things you use and like. A simple “I like this” or “thanks for working on this” can go a long way!

Happy people carry on using things quietly while negativity gets shared, memed, and shoved in front of folks who work on your favorite projects. One negative comment too often outweighs ten positive ones, because human brains are dumb.

Spread positivity, save someone from burnout.

GNOME users: do you use parental controls or digital well-being features, whether on GNOME or other platforms? What do you think is lacking in this area on the GNOME side?

I’d love to hear your feedback, as it sounds like we’ll be able to spend some time iterating on this soon.

neffscape,
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@cassidy I received two laptops as a gift for my kids (a 6 y/o boy and a 9 y/o girl) but I'm completely unaware of a good parental control app for Linux and my relatives suggest I give up on Linux and just use windows instead. I've been using Linux since 2004 and I honestly don't want my kids to become windows users. Have you got any recommendation? We use android Family Link to control their use of a tablet they have. Is there anything similar for Linux?

neffscape, to manjaro
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

One of the things I miss the most as a user, is the constant stream of news that other popular, non-rolling distros, enjoy after each stable release. People talk about Manjaro only when something breaks or something worse happens: nobody talks about interesting features or the fact that Manjaro is actually VERY stable (provided that you are in the stable branch and you don't use AUR). (Sorry about the final rant... it wasn't planned initially :)) @thelinuxEXP

neffscape,
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP fair enough... but Manjaro actually publishes "releases" from time to time. The last one was published in September and was codenamed "Uranus". Here are the release notes: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/manjaro-23-0-uranos-released/147448 . It could be interesting to review the major flavours from time to time.

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

neffscape,
@neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

@Techaltar I actually canceled my CS subscription a couple of days ago, because of the price increase and because I only actually used my subscription to watch your videos on Nebula. Now that I see that they are actually lying about the bundle subscription I'm glad I decided to cancel. Nothing pisses me more than this shady behavior.

@paulox @wsvincent it does apply in southern Switzerland (). At least in some parts of it (actually, not in Locarno). Please give us also the rules for perfectly roasted arrosticini. We definitely need them.

@paulox @wsvincent yeah, it would be nice. But Switzerland isn't the cheapest country to go, expecially if you want to host a big international event. Also, arrosticini are much better consumed "on location", after some bruschette and local montepulciano 👍
