Reminder that no one should buy a printer from HP, ever: https://www.theregister.com/2024/01/19/hps_ceo_spells_it_out/

@dangillmor @trending_bot friends don’t let friends by HP Printers.

@dangillmor Recently bought an Epson 2811 THAT YOU JUST FILL WITH CHEAP BOTTLES OF INK. Works great. Good quality too.

I have been waiting a very long time for a printer like this.

So much better than my previous Canon printer which demanded tiny, super expensive cartridges, and which was always throwing hissy fits, wanting to get itself replaced.

@Coolmccool @dangillmor Agreed, also bought an EcoTank printer and it works great (for Epson, nonetheless). And doesn't complain about third party ink.

@dangillmor Couldn't agree more.

My color Brother laser, purchased in 2013, still prints like new. Devices have come and gone in that time, all work perfectly. Even my Raspberry Pi auto detects it on the network.

I recently got around to recycling the 4 inkjets it replaced.

HP, I am a human being and I do not get into “relationships” with people or organizations that throw up as many red flags as you’ve raised. A relationship with HP seems like it could be a very toxic one.

JSkier,

@dangillmor Switched to Epson after the custom ink replacement kits stopped working on the old HP months ago. Pleased with the move. Individual ink tanks work just fine, less hassle.

@dangillmor I was completely not aware the printer companies started to do subscription models 🫣 this is scary and forcing to use this model sounds as a beginning of a problematic relationship.

    @tony @dangillmor @ghawkins thanks a lot for info and tips. I think will be in near future in a front of some change. Do you have some models you can recommend for home usage? Just simple print&scan, nothing fancy.

    In business school you learn to give away the razor and sell the blades.

    Don't cry that the razor was "an investment" when you can't sell your blades

    @dangillmor Why stop with printers? They screw buyers of all their products, not just printers.

    @dangillmor I was in the diagnostic group at Altos. They reversed a couple of standard bus pins to compel customers to either buy peripherals from them, or buy their adapter to put the signals back where they should be. This is sooooo 80’s. HP is led by idiots. They + Compaq were a perfect fit.

    @dangillmor @lisamelton it’s rather interesting timing. I have an old HP printer which needs new toner. I have been wrestling between spending the $300 for new toner (it’s a color laser) and just buying another manufacturer’s printer (b&w laser). I think I’ll go with the b&w laser.

    @waynedixon @dangillmor Good thinking! I recommend the Brother DCPL2550DW (now updated to the DCP-L2640DW), a printer AND copier. Couldn't do without it.

    @lisamelton @dangillmor I was actually looking at the Brother HL-L2305W, but the addition of a scanner and copier, might be worth the extra $80.

    I suspect that the starter toner in the Brother would be enough for a long time. I print so rarely.

    My current HP printer I bought in 2015 and have only replaced the black toner. The Yellow is out now, hence my dilemma.

    If you have an Amazon affiliate link, I’ll be happy to use it.

    @dangillmor Bought an HP all-in-one because my main use case was to digitize documents and it could scan both sides with a top loader.
    The printer part, as anyone guessed it, was the first of the 'all' part to fail.
    Didn't even print that much in its whole history. It asked for ink (subscription) all the time, after not even printing 20-ish documents.
    Then one day, the paper feeder of the printer, without even planning to print anything, broke down after turning on the device. HP is shit.

    I bought one ten years ago and hate it. Never again , or their laptops.

    @dangillmor I can understand someone buying one HP printer. I did that, once. What I can't begin to fathom is how anyone ever buys a second one. Just get a Brother already.

    JeanPoole_AZ,
    @JeanPoole_AZ@mastodon.social avatar

    @dangillmor Agree! I’ve purchased several HP printers over the years and they only continue to get worse (should have learned my lesson). I’m having one problem after the other with the current one and constantly have to unplug it in order to get it to print. They also charged me for their instant ink after I cancelled the trial. Their customer support is shit. I will NEVER buy another HP product of any kind.

    mjibrower,
    @mjibrower@mastodon.social avatar

    @dangillmor I’ve vowed to never buy any HP product, at work (if I have a say in the decision) or at home, because the boxes of Instant Ink cartridges I had already paid for became unusable when I canceled the Instant Ink subscription.
