A few days ago I made some predictions about the and :
https://szmer.info/post/349217

tl;dr:

  • soon media will discover Lemmy exists
  • they will miss Kbin exists
  • once they eventually notice it, they will be befuddled about it; Kbin will get called a "fork" of Lemmy at some point.
  • more Threadiverse instances will start turning off registrations to deal with the deluge of people joining
  • media will call this "elitist" (as opposed to BlueSky or ClubHouse being…

🧵

snaprails,

@rysiek All this talk of Lemmy, am I the only one that immediately thinks...

…invite-only, that's not "elitist" of course 🙄)

  • "thoughtful" articles show up asking questions about "how will Lemmy monetize", etc; and pointing out that choosing an instance is "confusing".
  • the wave eventually subsides; plenty of people stay on Threadiverse, some don't; this gets reported as "Lemmy has failed".

We know all this from the . Point is, just as "Mastodon" has not failed (it's order of magnitude bigger than before!), Threadiverse will not have failed either.

@rysiek Im on day 4 of no reddit. Am coping surprisingly well. Lemmy/Kbins recent explosion has come a long way to filling the idle time scrolling that reddit used to fill.

Am still waiting on my rredit data dump, but as tjis goes on, and i need reddit less and less, unless they walk back the recent policy changes significantly, i may just see my way to deleting my account entirely.

But ya, the media is gonna fudge this up.

Guh the keyboard on this tanlet sucks

A lot of media cannot think in any other terms than VC-funded startups chasing hockey-stick growth, and proclaiming them failed the moment that growth slows down.

in general, and in particular, are not VC-funded startups. They don't need that hockey-stick growth.

We're here to build resilient, equitable, safe communities, not to maximize shareholder value. Don't get distracted or disheartened because some people don't get that.

Some do:

ShadowJonathan,

I love this quote;

> You can think of Mastodon as a flotilla of boats of vastly different sizes, whereas Twitter is like being on a cruise ship the size of a continent. Some Mastodon boats might be cruise liners with as many as 50,000 passengers; others are just dinghies with a single occupant! The admin of each instance — the captain of your particular boat — might make arbitrary decisions you disagree with as heartily as with any commercial operator’s tacks and turns. But you’re not stuck on your boat, with abandoning ship as the only alternative. Instead, you can hop from one boat to another without losing your place in the flotilla community. Parts of a flotilla can also splinter off and form their own disconnected groups, but no boat, however large, is in charge of the community.

@ShadowJonathan @rysiek A big point is missing. This text seems to imply that every instance is managed by a single God-like individual ("the captain"). Instead, some instances depend on an organization, not on the quirks and whims of an individual.

@bortzmeyer when writing a piece of text for general public, certain simplifications need to be made. I don't feel Cory oversimplified here. 🤷‍♀️

I once used the analogy of an archipelago we build. The Spiral Island analogy:

The prophecy is coming true!

published a piece about today, where and Kbin are both mentioned:
https://www.techdirt.com/2023/06/13/reddit-blackout-crashes-the-site-as-reddit-users-realize-theyre-in-the-power-position/

Figures Techdirt is the first here. Kudos to them! I still think most media will miss Kbin or get confused about it.

But also: brace for impact, . Lemmy/Kbin are going to start existing in mainstream information space very soon. 😄

trebach,

@rysiek needs a list of communities like and Mastodon have.

It's up to about 25 now, https://KBin.pub/ is behind on listing them, and https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list doesn't list https://kbin.social/ on it

@aroom Agreed. Poor @ernest has probably been sleeping on his keyboard for the last month after long days and/or nights of coding. The last thing he needs is me adding to his workload

@trebach to be fair he will probably forever remember these few weeks as the absolute adrenaline rush and creative whirlwind.

And that's not something everyone gets to experience and ride out! :blobcatwink:

    @aroom @ernest

    ernest,

@rysiek Time is crazy, I will definitely remember that :) It's time to organize my work. For now, I have addressed the problem to the best of my ability.

You’ve done and are doing amazing work already!!

On a subtle note, I think your choice of name “kbin”, in a space that struggles with good names and “brands” (“fediverse” sucks IMO), is absolutely wonderful. Perfectly nerdy, unique, simple and memorable!
