"Today, we received a message from Reddit that our mod team will be replaced if we do not open up the subreddit immediately."

So, Reddit is now threatening mods directly. Wow. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/14bddtg/statement_from_the_moderators/

esther,

Imagine Mastodon gGmbH (the organization running mastodon.social) threatening our instance with replacing the admins if we don't open up our sign-ups or sth.

It's impossible and a completely nonsensical idea, and that's the power of a federated system.

@esther This is why I am so much more about the Fediverse now.

@esther That’s a ridiculous idea and that shows how ridiculous the whole Reddit-situation is.

@esther imagine mastodon.social spamming and not moderating its users but you can't really block it because it's the biggest instance with the largest userbase.
that's possible in a federated with gigantic nodes system.

:-/

esther,

@lord those are two very different issues though. And you absolutely can block it. Some instances do. It may not be what you want but mastodon.social can’t come in and force you to federate with them.

10meisterbaelle,

@esther
They could threaten with defederation, but that domain would stay yours (unless ICANN or the registry takes it)

@esther Just imagine being a scab trying to moderate r/antiwork.

lougrims,
undergroundbeef,

@esther If the protest wasn’t hurting them, as claimed, they wouldn’t be making threats. Malicious compliance, similar to r/pics seems to be the best way forward.

toanju,

@esther I pretty much like the https://www.reddit.com/r/pics solution to this.

@esther the protesting subreddits need to delete themselves to fight reddit

protimetheft,

@esther and on the antiwork sub. Ironic and wild

SalivatingDeadGuy,

@esther holy crap. Guh I'm so sad about Reddit. But I'm excited to learn a new way to navigate community. Anyway, I'm sorry this is happening to you.

toxtethogrady,

@esther Elon Musk just plain fired all his Twitter content moderators. And it shows...

skry,

@esther @Npars01 https://reddark.io/
4252 subreddits are currently dark

malwareminigun,
suicideasuicide,

@esther Ironic.

AlolanYoda,

@esther What's up with all the users on reddit recently being so anti-protest? I guess this was to be expected, but it's such a stark contrast to the previous attitude which was mostly to be against the API changes and the admins' general attitude. They're all calling the mods and users selfish for blacking out the site... I was expecting people to be more neutral rather than actively vilifying the users who chose to join the protest. It's weird to see so many people side with corporate Reddit and defending spez of all people

@esther Just manually deleted all my reddit posts and replies. Took about an hour. Interesting to see all the bits I had written flash by. More personal than using a tool to do it automatically. There was a great deal of kindness in what I wrote.

It was pretty funny to see that r/pics and r/gifs have decided that only pictures of John Oliver will be allowed.

r/gifs took a vote and the members voted 13,696 to -1,851 for this change! https://www.reddit.com/r/gifs/comments/14b6pz8/poll_decide_on_the_future_of_rgifs/

@esther they're really going to make me delete my account. This will be the second social media platform in less than a year.

The era of social media platforms owned by a single entity is coming to an end.

thejodie,

@esther it's such a terrible decision on Reddit's part that I hate to even suggest they approach it differently.

BootyLasher,

@esther it's unfortunate that Reddit is the way that Reddit is, but let's not forget that these literal reddit mods volunteered their labor to enrich a faceless corporation that has repeatedly platformed child porn, Nazis, creepshots, and a fuck ton of other disgusting stuff. Don't have a ton of sympathy for them now that they're finding the monster their labor birthed feels no loyalty towards them.

esther,

@BootyLasher that’s a really far fetched conclusion to draw. Blaming communities for the structures they exist within is usually not fair. And mods of subreddits have had no say in how the company is run.

BootyLasher,

@esther it doesn't seem that unfair to me to blame a community for the structure it exists in when it explicitly chose to exist in that space in the first place. It's not like we are just learning now that Reddit is the way it is. I mean christ, this is a site that openly had a subreddit dedicated to CSAM for several years.

I don't blame mods for how reddit is run. I blame them for enriching Reddit with free labor, despite knowing how it is run. Volunteering for evil people is evil.

Josh_D,

@esther Reddit sucks

kinyutaka,

@esther

Irony: the subreddit /r/antiwork being told to work for free or be fired and replaced by people who will.

Sagadego171,

@esther man fuck reddit for that

arnan,

@esther time to jump ship and move community elsewhere then.
