I love writing about the , and I'm passionate about the open web, but this is what it's like covering this beat as a journalist. Sadly, it doesn't get the eyeballs, as they used to say. Also, I have nearly as many 'likes' on Mastodon and Threads for the fedi post as people who have actually read it! On the bright side, I know from the comments here that the people who did read it are super-smart ;)

@ricmac just spit balling here but that's not an article I would read. From a fediverse perspective I'm interested in it's growth and its culture.

The way people login to it isn't really a topic I would care to read about.

It would be interesting to see a break down by reader source in articles, assuming engagement is the same on platforms which group is clicking and engaging more.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a lot).

@dangillmor it's unreal that businesses and news orgs stay on there when there are other options outside of even the Fediverse..

I once saw someone rail against a Harry Potter game and refuse to buy it because of JK (fair enough I understand that stance) - but they continued posting several times a day on Twitter.. I could never wrap my head around it... Dopamine is a hell of a drug.

I've full on blocked all of Twitter via PiHole now so won't even accidentally give them a click. Screw Musk.

Where to start 1) if you have a server that makes all the rules it's not a decentralized platform it's just people hosting servers for you with your rules.

  1. This isn't better than , and the veiled attempts to drag right supremacists using it's open source code to some how make model seem better is disingenuous.

  2. if Bluesky truly embraced social media why wouldn't it help improve and instead build their own?

@nixCraft the problem is Google blocking extensions that block ads is it pisses off the people who have the technical know how to change browsers.

I understand why they think this is a good idea, but it seems incredibly short sighted.

There's reasons people jumped to chrome why give them reasons to jump off.

More doom and gloom from me, but man, the real estate market has been ready for collapse for a while now. Here and abroad.

Interest rates are so high that if you have a house, you won’t sell. Not to mention prices that put everything well beyond the reach of most people. Which is driven by lack of supply because people won’t sell.

And then there’s the markets in China which have had major players like Evergrande that were or are on the edge of failing, couldn’t make payments… last I heard I think the CEO had disappeared.

If they collapse, they’re taking down Chinese real estate and that’s gonna hit us also.

@Laukidh I think the large corporate buyers are proping up the real estate market.. having seemignly infinite money and stranggeling averge people to pay obscene rents doesn't seem to bother them... more of a business plan it seems.

@schizanon genuine question, what would you have YouTube do? There's cost associated with streaming content, it has to be paid for somehow, they have a paid option that clearly most people won't pay for, so what other options do they have?

@schizanon I guess I'm playing devil's advocate, but theres no need for you to use YouTube, you can use Peertube today or just not consume content from a platform you don't want to support.

Indeed if you want platforms to die the best thing to do is not participate on them, a stance I've taken with Facebook and Twitter by leaving those ecosystems.

@obeto It's sad that people won't just enmass leave platforms like this.. I'm still surprised by the number of universities and businesses use Twitter even now.

It's a bad look but money before ethics I suppose.
