"What is happening at Boeing is happening in every industry. A general trend toward financialisation & hedge fund culture that sees only numbers, not peoples lives or wellbeing. It's just that aviation has a way of making the corruption impossible to hide. It's the dead canary." - Ben King

@ned I'm sure someone will come along soon with some "seif regulating market" bs, so before that happens: I think if a govt has to bail a company out, that is clearly a company that has become nationalized and needs to be operated as a public interest.

Otherwise, let them fail like Pan Am and so many others.

It's the same lesson, over and over, but it's not taught in B-School.

Same lesson as Samsung and exploding batteries. Same lesson as NASA and exploding space shuttles.

An MBA is capitalism's rulebook. Game the system, no matter what. Alienate the rules from all outcomes but financial ones.

(Important to note that the GOP wants to run the country "like a business").

@DoesntExist

"Like a business" simply means to exploit for gain. A government's gain is supposed to be for the people. Taking away from the people to concentrate profits is the exact opposite of what a government is meant to do.

@ned @DoesntExist And it is exactly what the British government is doing and enabling. When Trump comes back, the process will, no doubt, accelerate in the US.

Consulting engineering too.

We used to be an engineering company with a marketing & accounting department.

Now, it's a marketing & accounting company with an engineering department.

"Why are we so over budget on this project?"

"Well, marketing proposed a completely unrealistic budget and engineering isn't a charity."

"You have a poor attitude."

@ned Not that having engineers in tops spots is any guarantee. Westinghouse went down the tubes when the CEO engineer let the inferiority complex against GE let the big W get sunk with $4 billion of bad Florida real estate deals in the mid 1990s. Although I guess that could be viewed as taking the loss on going outside your expertise

hopfgeist,

@woo @ned Aviation regulation has largely been able to escape enshitification. Oversight works astonishingly well. Some high-profile accidents notwithstanding, commercial aviation is still mindbogglingly safe, because by and large, shortcust aren't tolerated. The way accident investigations and many airlines work, you can make it know when you made a mistake (via ombudspersons if necessary) so everyone can lern. Blaming the individual does happen, and people need to take responsibility for their actions and cannot be reckless, but the industry as a whole has learned that a no-blame Just Culture is the safer (and, ultimately, also more profitable) way to do things.

"If you think safety is expensive, wait till you have an accident."
